Job Description

As a Software Development Engineer I, you'll contribute to solutions for complex technical problems, own development and maintenance of core frameworks, lead project feature design and implementation, provide strategic input, and contribute to KPIs. Responsibilities include checking in clean code daily, becoming a core member of Quality Engineering and Productivity Engineering teams, developing and supporting test automation, working with product and development teams on quality solutions, resolving framework issues, and collaborating effectively. This role requires proficiency in object-oriented design and at least one programming language (Node/JavaScript, Java, Python), experience with test automation, and excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Product Engineering is a unified team responsible for the engineering of Disney Entertainment & ESPN digital and streaming products and platforms. This includes product engineering, media engineering, quality assurance, engineering behind personalization, commerce, lifecycle, and identity.

What You Will Do

As a member of our team, you will strive to accomplish the following goals:

  • Contributing to the successful implementation of solutions for complex technical problems with engineering teams

  • Owning the development and maintenance of one or more functional areas of core frameworks, execution environments, build systems and tooling used across multiple products

  • Leading the successful design & implementation of one or more project features with input from senior engineers

  • Providing strategic input on future initiatives with stakeholders and other engineers

  • Contributing to and collecting data to inform Key Performance Indicators used for defining project statuses and effectiveness 

  • Check-in valuable, clean code daily that adds new features and capabilities

  • Becoming a core member of our Quality Engineering team, helping others increase productivity through innovation, and championing the core value of Disney Quality

  • Developing and supporting test automation frameworks, execution environments, build systems, and reporting tools

  • Work with product and development teams to implement a full stack quality solution

  • Investigating and resolving any framework, tool or execution of environmental issues affecting our services

  • Becoming a core member of our Productivity Engineering team, helping others increase productivity through innovation, and championing the core value of Disney Quality

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Proficient in object-oriented design and expertise with one of the following programming languages: Node/JavaScript, Java, Python

  • Experience with test automation and unit testing frameworks

  • Excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to use standard software development lifecycle (SDLC) tools such as Jira and Confluence, and version control systems.

  • Organized, detail-oriented and able to deliver project tasks on time.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Highly motivated, self-starting individual

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Progressive experience in a software development (SDE) occupation, including automated testing of front end and backend services

  • Experience shipping a production React or Node.js application

  • Experience in mobile application development and testing

  • Experience with developing applications in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS)

  • Experience working with Agile methodologies

  • Working knowledge of web accessibility fundamentals

  • Experience with Kafka, Amazon SQS, and Kinesis

  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Spinnaker, and continuous integration/delivery systems

  • Experience writing Gherkin Syntax to facilitate the development of automated test scenarios

  • Experience developing advanced mocking mechanisms (e.g., rule-based proxies and dummy-services)

  • Experience with test suite/case/run management tools (e.g., JIRA Xray, etc.)

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or a comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience


The hiring range for this position in Seattle, WA is $99,900 to $133,900 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
