The Space Weather & GNSS Engineer contributes to the GNSS part of the 24/7 ICAO space weather information service: monitoring of space weather situation including advisory issuance, management of space weather data processing. Ensures EGNOS Signal in Space performance monitoring, degradation events recording and analysis. Your Main Activities Will Be
Space Weather main activities:
- Operations, maintenance and evolution of the space weather monitoring chain to provide the service,
- Technical point of contact with space weather product providers;
- Coordination, in particular for handovers as a deputy of the space weather service leader:
- Space weather situation monitoring/analysis of any potential impact in GNSS performance for aviation,
- Exploitation of the monitoring chains results and third parties’ data/outputs. Advisory issuance when needed and space weather situation analysis,
- Participation in the bimonthly handover with other global centres and provision of related materials.
- Contribution to the coordination activities with other actors of the service,
- Contribution to the supervision of trainees, work-study students, PhD students,
- Participation in international workshops related to space weather in particular those addressing the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) service, contribution to the redaction of abstracts, articles and posters.
Main activities relating to the impact of space weather on EGNOS:
- Writing technical reports addressing underperformance events or EGNOS SIS (Signal in Space) related studies;
- Coordination within the engineering team for more accurate characterization of the root causes of performance degradations;
- Point of contact of the performance team to assess the contributions of the space environment on the EGNOS Signal in Space performance degradations;
- Contribution to the development/evolution of tools to ease the analysis of the impacts of Space Weather on GNSS EGNOS SIS.
Profile
- Background and knowledge of space weather impact on signal propagation in ionosphere
- Technical knowledge of GNSS technologies, knowledge of SBAS systems, (of EGNOS is a plus)
- Knowledge of space systems operations and real time service delivery would be desirable
- Experience in software development and data processing (Matlab/Python)
- Strong autonomy and rigor
- Ability to assume responsibilities
- Showing initiative and synthesis capabilities
- Good communication and reporting skills
- Team worker and good coordinator
Job Requirements
Languages: High English Level (B2) - CEFR
Engineering degree or equivalent
For Space Weather Service With ICAO
- Available for work starting on 06 UTC for supporting ACFJ (Australia-Canada-France-Japan) Consortium internal handover (about 20 days per year),
- Available for on-call duty (daytime work) during weekends and public holidays (10 to 15 days per year).
