Job Description

The Senior Director of Hardware Systems Engineering at Microsoft will lead a team in building cutting-edge compute, storage, networking, and accelerator hardware solutions. Responsibilities include collaborating with cross-functional teams (architecture, silicon engineering, firmware, etc.), driving new technology analysis and risk mitigation, defining technical requirements, and ensuring scalability across the hardware/firmware/software stack. The role also involves collaborating with partners, managing the engineering interface with customers and vendors, analyzing build data, and owning the calibration source plan for the product.

Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide and we are looking for passionate, high-energy engineers to help achieve that mission. 

As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Cloud AI and Advanced System Engineering (CAASE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.  

 We are looking for a Senior Director Hardware Systems Engineering to join the team.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Experience leading people. 
  • BS / MS in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent industry experience.  
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in system (compute, storage, networking, and/or accelerator) level design and/or implementation across the hardware development lifecycle.  
  • Experience with hardware, firmware, management firmware, and/or software (system & application stack) interfaces across all modules in a system.  
  • Ability to work across multiple disciplines (hardware, firmware, software, and/or data center infrastructure) to identify risks, drive discussions, detail system tradeoffs, and assess impact.  

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • Knowledge of high-volume silicon (SoCs, GPUs, or FPGAs), compute, storage, and/or networking design, manufacturing, and deployment.  
  • Experience with highspeed interfaces such as PCIe, DDR, and ethernet.  
  • In-depth experience with operating systems (Windows and/or Linux), system firmware (BIOS, BMC), and system security (hardware and software).  
  • Knowledge about datacenters & operations at scale.  
  • Experience managing hardware programs through the entire product lifecycle.  
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills. 
  • Firmware and software integration experience 

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Responsibilities

 

  • Build and support a team of hardware systems engineers spanning but not limited to mechanical, thermal, and electrical engineering disciplines.  
  • Collaborate with architecture, silicon engineering, firmware, hardware design, hardware validation, OS (operating systems), manufacturing, and customer teams to build state-of-the-art compute, storage, networking, and accelerator hardware solutions.    
  • Drive Perform NUDD (new, unique, different and difficult) technology and feature analysis and provide risk assessment and mitigations.    
  • Drive technical requirements and ensure the solution is flexible and scalable across the full (HW/FW/SW) stack.   
  • Enable platform and solution level discussions, influencing architecture of the product, and delivering to product goals across quality, reliability, and performance.   
  • Collaborate with internal, external, and open-source partners to onboard innovative technologies in a seamless manner.   
  • Experience working in the E2E Solution space of the server design collaborating with several cross functional teams across silicon, Platform, and customer teams.  
  • Own the engineering interface between the Customer, development teams across silicon, platform, ODM vendors and the factory test/calibration team in the form of a test/user scenario’s development.  
  • Analyze and evaluate build data for each module engineering build, presenting summary to the development team and adjusting test spec limits based on build analysis.   
  • Own a calibration source plan for the product, assuring a continuous supply of approved sources for the expected module/system life.
