Job Description

Tesla's Energy team seeks a Sr. Electronics Failure Analysis Engineer to identify root causes of product failures in Powerwall, Megapack, and Supercharger systems. This role involves hands-on investigation of electromechanical components, designing and conducting fault replication tests, collaborating with engineering teams and suppliers, and implementing countermeasures. The ideal candidate possesses strong power electronics expertise, experience with various test equipment, and familiarity with failure analysis techniques (X-ray, cross-sectioning, etc.). Responsibilities include driving issue resolution, supporting design reviews, and providing input to improve product design and manufacturing yield. Excellent communication skills are essential.

What to Expect

The Failure Analysis team mission is to determine root cause and contributing factors for product failures, in order to improve operational efficacy and the general customer experience of Tesla’s Energy Products. 

Engineers and Technicians on this team are responsible for a wide variety Energy Product systems, including Powerwall, Megapack and Supercharger. This is an individual contributor role with a high degree of internal visibility and cross collaboration across multiple globally dispersed engineering functions.

The successful candidate will need to be intimately familiar with the detailed behavior of electro-mechanical components and the tools and equipment used in their design and manufacture.  They will work with other Engineering teams to determine root cause and implement countermeasures of field issues to improve quality, reliability, durability of the products.

What You’ll Do
  • Drive issue resolution from root cause analysis to countermeasure implementation on electromechanical components from Tesla’s Energy Products.  

  • Investigate system assemblies, modules, components to identify root cause of failure in Tesla’s Energy products. 

  • Design and conduct fault replication tests experiments on power converters and low voltage PCBA's including board rework and FW/HW testing. 

  • Collaborate with appropriate engineers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to drive resolution to the identified failure causes. 

  • Provide inputs to design and manufacturing teams to improve design and production yield. Can be achieved through lessons learnt, product teardowns etc. helping to identify risks. 

  • Support design reviews and DFMEAs based on prior failure experience.   

  • Candidate should be detail oriented with excellent communication skills. 

What You’ll Bring
  • BS/MS Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or equivalent experience. 

  • Strong demonstrable experience in Power Electronics/power converter circuits for energy storage/automotive applications. 

  • Electrical/Electronic design experience a strong plus. 

  • Strong demonstrable hands-on experience with electrical test equipment: Power Supplies, Multimeter, Oscilloscopes, and other common equipment. 

  • Strong & demonstratable focus on adhering to Lab safety practices. 

  • Extremely proficient at reading schematics and troubleshooting analog and digital circuits. 

  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn the different failure analysis techniques including 2D and 3D X-Ray, Cross Sectioning, FTIR, DSC, SEM, and FLIR Thermography. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. 

  • Experience with hand tools, basic power tools, soldering, and instrumentation is desirable.
