Job Description

As a Senior Optical Engineer, Software, you'll contribute to developing new test metrics and stations for AR/MR device components, measuring image quality and colorimetric quantities. You will collaborate with engineering teams, automate image acquisition workflows, evaluate test results using image processing, and design scalable software solutions. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and maintaining software, analyzing optical metrology tools, conducting repeatability tests, and summarizing results statistically. The role demands strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills within a fast-paced environment.
Must have:
  • 5+ years experience with Python/C++
  • Strong image processing & computer vision
  • Robust software architecture design
  • Test automation & custom system development
  • Experience with GitLab/GitHub
  • Optical metrology tool analysis
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills
Good to have:
  • Advanced degree in relevant field

The opportunity 

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core to Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Senior Optical Engineer, Software on Magic Leap's Hardware Engineering team, you will work with an experienced cross-functional team to develop and manufacture innovative leading-edge optical components for AR/MR devices. The team features a collaborative and hands-on environment that fosters engineering excellence, creativity, and innovation in the interdisciplinary areas of optical metrology and testing, device fabrication, display technologies, image processing, and color sciences.

This hybrid role is based on our Plantation, FL office and will require you to come into our office regularly.

What you’ll do 

  • Contribute to development of new test metrics, test stations and alignment stations for prototype components and subsystems that measure image quality, radiometric, and colorimetric quantities to assess performance.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams within Magic Leap to understand the key design parameters of their specific technology and how to properly evaluate them.
  • Drive efficiency and consistency by automating image acquisition and processing workflows.
  • Evaluate components and subsystem test results using image processing algorithms to quantify performance versus established metrics.
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable software solutions utilized across multiple domains, ensuring reliability and reusability.

The experience you bring

  • 5+ years of industry or academic experience with Python and/or C++.
  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Strong foundation in image processing and computer vision, particularly in display image quality assessment and feature detection.Adept at designing and developing robust software architectures and projects.Solid understanding of programming paradigms and their appropriate applications.
  • Background in test automation and developing custom test or alignment systems, including integration with equipment APIs and automation tools.
  • Experience with code collaboration tools like GitLab, GitHub, etc.
  • Proven ability to analyze and troubleshoot optical metrology tools, conduct repeatability tests and summarize results using statistical analyses.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and critical analysis skills.
  • Capable of managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while delivering high-quality results to cross-functional subject matter experts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective collaboration across teams and departments.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Advanced degree (MS or higher) in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with computer vision libraries like OpenCV, SciPy, Pillow, or similar tools.
  • Experience with developing GUI-based applications.
  • Familiarity with optical metrology methods, camera systems, and imaging instrumentation.
  • Experience with cloud computing (AWS, Google Cloud, etc.)
  • Knowledge of color science and colorimetry principles.
  • Prior experience in the AR/VR industry, understanding its unique challenges and opportunities.
