Job Description

Senior Software Engineer for Disney's HTML5 video player across D+, Hulu, ESPN, and ABC. Responsibilities include designing and implementing new features integrating with Disney media services, developing solutions for the Disney Media Player and internal tools, collaborating on design and debugging, researching and developing player experiences, and participating in team planning. The role requires collaboration with other playback teams to ensure consistent architecture and a best-in-class streaming experience. The ideal candidate will have experience with HTML5 video playback technologies (MSE/EME, HLS, MPEG-DASH, etc.) and a strong understanding of software engineering principles.
Must have:
  • 5+ years software engineering experience
  • 1+ year HTML5 video playback experience
  • Experience with MSE/EME, HLS, MPEG-DASH
  • Strong communication skills

Media Engineering is an innovative, collaborative organization that builds the software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best possible playback experience to our viewers. Media Engineering handles audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.

Our team is seeking someone who can join the team as a senior software engineer for our HTML5 video player for D+, Hulu, ESPN and ABC. Your focus will be on collaborating with media playback teams on other platforms to ensure a consistent software architecture which delivers a best in class streaming experience for our viewers while providing a foundation for media playback innovation at Disney.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement solutions for new features which integrate with various Disney media services/back-ends.

  • Design and implement solutions for Disney Media Player, Internal Tools and related dependent projects.  This can be in the service of specific Product requirements or teams specific needs.

  • Collaboration and design for Disney Media Player. This can include requirements gathering, debugging, and integration help to support internal and external partners.

  • Research and development for Disney Media Player experiences, integration, and testing.

  • Participation in planning near and far term work as well as team agile ceremonies and meetings.

Qualifications:

  • 5 years experience in software engineering.

  • 1 year experience working directly with HTML5 video playback (one or more of these technologies: MSE/EME, HLS, MPEG-DASH, Transport Stream, CMAF).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and / or equivalent work experience.

  • Strong verbal/written communication and data presentation skills.

Bonus Skills:

  • Proven track record at a senior software engineering level.

  • Experience and expertise deploying web applications in the Amazon Web Services environment.

  • Experience working with server side JavaScript in Node.js or Deno.


The hiring range for this position in New York is $145,400 to $195,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
