Staff DevOps Engineer, Infrastructure Engineering

As a member of the Infrastructure Engineering team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining tooling, and supporting Toast's core infrastructure within AWS and adjacent technologies. The systems involved include but are not limited to the following:

• Network / VPC topology
• Compliance tooling and reporting for PCI, SOX, SOC 2, and GDPR
• CNAPP tooling
• Monitoring and observability
• Cost management
• Application hosting and orchestration infrastructure
• Data-layer infrastructure (relational and non-relational databases)
  
  

You will work with engineering and product staff in the US and Ireland to enable Toast to continue to grow its application offerings and support its existing workloads. You will also help Infrastructure Engineering establish its presence in Bangalore alongside an already-present SRE group.

About This Role (Responsibilities)

• Build infrastructure and software-defined networking in AWS, including integrating with external systems (SaaS, partner networks)
• Provide production infrastructure support underlying established Toast systems in AWS
• Use your familiarity with DevOps methodologies and practices to foster a culture of quality while facilitating developer velocity
  
  

Do you have the right ingredients? (Requirements)

• 8+ years relevant work experience and strong, hands-on technical background
• Experience maintaining large-scale infrastructure, including both production and non-production workloads, and configuration management via Terraform and Ansible.
• Deep experience with AWS products, AWS Organizations, SCPs and APIs.
• Experience with infrastructure-level monitoring, alerting, escalation, and production support,
• Experience in IdPs (Okta, Auth0),
• Experience building automation tooling in Python or Go and you believe internal tools deserve unit tests
• Experience with relational and nonrelational databases (PostgreSQL and DynamoDB a plus),
• Experience in OS Linux
• Experience with modern CI/CD tools and containerization and orchestration technologies, especially Docker

Our Tech Stack

Toast’s commercial products run on a stack that ranges from guest and restaurant-facing Android tablets to backend services in Java to internal, guest-facing and restaurant-facing web apps.

The Infrastructure Engineering group manages Toast's infrastructure via the AWS API, using configuration management tools like Terraform, Ansible, and internally developed clients using Python and Go. We rely heavily on Datadog and Splunk for monitoring and observability, and on FireHydrant for alerting and incident response.

Infrastructure Engineering provides the products and services to support, deploy, and monitor our product suite, which uses a microservice architecture written using Java and Kotlin and DropWizard. AWS products are also in heavy usage, ranging from S3 to RDS, DynamoDB, ECS, Lambda, and many others. We have our own platform for user management, service discovery/elevations, and load balancing. We use Apache Spark for large scale data workloads including query and batch processing. The main Toast POS application is an Android application written in Java and Kotlin. For data synchronization between tablets and our cloud platform we operate RabbitMQ and Apache Pulsar clusters as well as direct tablet communication to the applications' RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
