The New York Times is seeking a Staff Editor for its Opinion section to curate and produce content for the print newspaper. The role involves selecting Opinion pieces, managing copy flow, writing compelling display type, and editing pieces for length and accuracy. The editor will collaborate with various teams to ensure the print report is engaging, timely, and accurate, adhering to the Times's editorial standards and its mission of seeking truth and helping people understand the world. This is a hybrid position based in New York City.

About the Role

The New York Times is looking for an editor to help curate and produce the Opinion section of the print newspaper.

This is a hybrid position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. 

Responsibilities:

  • Select Opinion pieces to appear in the daily newspaper
  • Manage copy flow for the daily print newspaper
  • Write compelling display type
  • Edit Opinion pieces for length and accuracy
  • Collaborate with story editors, copy editors, art directors, photo editors and news assistants to ensure the print report is dynamic, engaging, timely, accurate and sent to press on time.
  • Follow The Times's editorial standards.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the print editor in Opinion.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of journalism experience
  • 1+ years of experience editing for print 
  • Experience writing accurate, engaging display type
  • Experience working in a deadline-driven news environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent news judgment
  • Editing skills around trimming for fit
  • Experience shifting priorities and demands based on department needs and the news cycle
  • A spirit of collaboration
