The Staff Editor, Photo Production works closely with photo leadership, staff photographers, editors, contributors, the image support team and newsroom finance to support photo department production workflows, technology and operations in a fast-moving and deadline-oriented newsroom. You’ll be a key player in equipping our team to advance our news gathering, and will help keep the Times’s photo department at the forefront of technical innovation.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing an up-to-date and accessible inventory of equipment, ensuring equipment is logged, tracked and in working order while coordinating shipments and repairs.
  • Create, manage, and track Capital Expenditure Requests and non-capital purchases for staff photographers, including yearly budget forecasting.
  • Coordinate the procurement of all equipment for staff photographers.
  • Coordinate technical, and organizational aspects of live event photo and video coverage as required, including visual editing of breaking and planned news event visuals when needed. Travel may be required to provide on-location support. 
  • Assist photo editors with photo and video post-production support including: filing, color correction, clip aggregation and readying assets for publication.
  • Research and test the latest camera technologies and new media workflows, regularly communicating these findings to staff photographers and editors, and making recommendations for procurement, experiments and long-term investments.
  • Maintain consistent communications and collaborative posture with many departments including Video
  • Prepare how-to documentation and help train staff photographers and editors on new visual formats and workflows.
  • Assist editors and freelance photographers with SFTP/workflow troubleshooting and prepare training materials to address repeating issues.
  • Manage the Photo Studio operations including scheduling, equipment maintenance, lighting equipment support, on-site coordination, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Respond promptly and accurately to equipment, technical support, and other work requests from staff.
  • Interface with the finance department to onboard new vendors, pay invoices in a timely manner, track purchasing and meet your department’s budget. 
  • Present at departmental knowledge-sharing sessions about new technologies and workflows.
  • Build and maintain our photo department’s relationships with camera, software and photo technology vendors, managing NDAs and proofs of concept.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to a Deputy Editor on the Photography Desk.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience in a newsroom or equivalent.
  • Substantial knowledge of a wide array of photographic, lighting and video equipment.
  • Substantial knowledge of digital tools and programs, including content management systems, image handling software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, and PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, SFTP programs, computer networking, and social media platforms. 
  • Broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape, including digitally-innovative formats and mobile-first multimedia presentations.
  • Must understand and support systems for creating, ingesting, editing, exporting, and archiving photos and, increasingly, video content. 
  • Experience learning new technology.
  • Familiarity with collecting and editing photos, audio and video.
  • Adobe creative suite video editing software skills, including Premiere Pro.
  • Knowledge of photographic usage and copyright issues.

  • Passion for photography, journalism and visual storytelling.
  • Experience prioritizing and managing multiple projects in fast-moving environments in order to meet deadlines.
  • Sharp news judgment and a solid understanding of journalistic ethics.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple assignments.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
  • Experience problem-solving and using initiative to take on and learn new tasks.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends.
