Unity's graphics drivers team is the foundation of all rendering at Unity. This Staff Graphics Engineer role involves reviewing, designing, and enhancing Unity's 3D rendering engine across multiple graphics APIs (Vulkan, Direct3D, Metal, etc.) and operating systems. Collaboration with other R&D teams is crucial for supporting and advising on rendering approaches and pipelines. Responsibilities also include developing testing and optimization frameworks and diagnostic tools. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in computer graphics rendering techniques, C++ programming, and algorithm optimization. They will work on everything from simple cubes to complex scenes rendered with Unity's HDRP.
Must have:
  • 10+ years in computer graphics rendering
  • 8+ years C++ programming experience
  • Expert in geometric rendering, lighting, texturing
  • Algorithm implementation, debugging, optimization
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of Vulkan/Metal/DX12
  • Experience with RenderDoc, Pix, nSight
  • C# development experience
  • Unity editor and tools experience

The opportunity
Unity’s graphics drivers team is the foundation of all rendering at Unity. From the billions of mobile games, PC and console titles, XR experiences, or other real-time rendering applications, every pixel Unity renders flows through our code. We are the ultimate cross-platform engineering team, doing graphics on virtually every graphically-capable device in the marketplace today.

Our team is responsible for the application interface to the graphics hardware, which we implement using industry-standard graphics APIs like Vulkan, Direct3D, Metal, and WebGPU, to name a few. From the simplest cube to the most complex scene rendered with Unity’s high-definition rendering pipeline (HDRP), the graphics drivers team along with their shader compiler colleagues bring the hardware to life.

What you'll be doing

  • Review, advise, design, and enhance Unity’s 3D rendering engine across the multiple graphics APIs (e.g., Vulkan, Direct3D, Metal, etc.) and operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Windows, Apple’s macOS and iOS, Linux, and Android)
  • Collaborate with other Unity R&D organizations to support and advise on the development and maintenance of our rendering approaches and pipelines
  • Support and develop testing, optimization frameworks, and other diagnostic tools to maintain product quality and performance

What we're looking for

  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related scientific discipline, or equivalent experience
  • At least ten years working with computer graphics rendering techniques including geometric rendering, lighting and illumination, texture mapping, and compute shading
  • At least eight years of C++ programming experience using classes, templates, and polymorphism
  • Ability to implement, debug, and optimize complex algorithms, shaders, and rendering sequences
  • Excellent communication skills

You might also have

  • Knowledge of modern graphics APIs (Vulkan/Metal/DX12)
  • Experience with RenderDoc, Pix, NVIDIA’s nSight, and similar tools
  • C# development experience
  • Experience using Unity’s editor and tools
