Job Description

This Staff Power Engineer role at Google's Platforms Engineering team focuses on developing custom silicon power solutions for Google's direct-to-consumer products. You'll design and build systems for Google's large-scale computing infrastructure, from circuit design to large-system design and high-volume manufacturing. Responsibilities include innovating and designing on-board power conversion solutions, analyzing performance trade-offs, leading projects involving new technologies, partnering with industry leaders, ensuring successful roll-out and validation, providing technical leadership, and troubleshooting complex system-level power issues. This is a hands-on role requiring physical interaction with hardware in a simulated data center environment.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • 6+ years power chip/system experience
  • 3+ years technical leadership
  • Power electronics fundamentals knowledge
  • On-board power conversion design
  • Project leadership and execution

  • PhD in relevant field
  • Data analysis experience
  • Data center power system design experience
  • Power converter modeling & simulation knowledge

Job Details

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience working in a power chip or system power management technical environment.
  • 3 years of experience in technical leadership.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with analyzing and organizing data.
  • Experience in data center power system design.
  • Knowledge of power electronics fundamentals and various power conversion designs for data center power delivery.
  • Knowledge of power converter modeling and simulation.

Our Platforms Infrastructure Engineering team designs and builds the hardware and software technologies that power all of Google's services. Our computational challenges are complex and unique, enabled by cutting-edge custom hardware designed and made in-house.

As a Hardware Engineer, you will design and build the systems that are the largest and most powerful computing infrastructure. You will develop from the lowest levels of circuit design to large system design and see those systems all the way through to high volume manufacturing. Your work has the potential to shape the machinery that goes into our cutting-edge data centers affecting millions of Google users. As a key member of the team, you will manage projects in multiple areas with your expertise. You will also monitor the performance of vendors working on projects and evaluate new technologies.

Application Instructions: This is a specialized role which requires physical interaction with hardware equipment in a simulated data center environment, utilizing Google labs, power, and safety equipment. Regular development and processing of engineering hardware must be performed on site.
The ML, Systems, & Cloud AI (MSCA) organization at Google designs, implements, and manages the hardware, software, machine learning, and systems infrastructure for all Google services (Search, YouTube, etc.) and Google Cloud. Our end users are Googlers, Cloud customers and the billions of people who use Google services around the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $174,000-$258,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Innovate and design on board power conversion specifications and solutions. Analyze performance, cost, reliability and availability trade-offs.
  • Lead projects that involve new technologies or new uses of multiple existing technologies.
  • Partner with power industry leaders to lead evaluation and adoption of the most compelling cutting edge technologies.
  • Engage cross functionally to ensure successful roll-out, testing and complete validation.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction while troubleshooting complex system level power issues.
