About the role

We are seeking a Staff Security Engineer to lead our Privacy Engineering efforts at Character. As one of the founding members of our security team, you’ll partner closely with cross-functional partners to implement privacy controls for Character’s growing platform and build the technology that powers them. This is an exciting opportunity to jump into the cutting-edge field of AI privacy and help shape the next generation of security architecture.

Among the critical tasks you’ll take on:

  • Conceptualize, architect, and drive key strategic Privacy Engineering initiatives

  • Develop technical systems to operationalize privacy controls

  • Work cross-functionally with teams across Character to establish a framework and build tools for anonymizing both third-party and user data

  • Work with the Legal team to define data minimization, retention, and deletion protocols and build the technology to implement them

  • Partner with the Data team to implement data governance solutions

  • Partner with the Security team on data protection issues

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of industry experience working on privacy-related projects and/or backend development

  • Deep knowledge of common approaches to solving data privacy problems at scale

  • Experience working with relational and non-relational data stores

  • Familiarity with major cloud service providers such as GCP, AWS, and/or Azure

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a knack for identifying and addressing bottlenecks, ensuring that backend systems perform optimally under varying loads

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams and stakeholders

  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

You will be a good fit if:

  • You are proactive and have a “get things done” mindset

  • You enjoy working cross-functionally across different teams (e.g. Legal and Product) and balancing privacy and product needs

  • You’re excited to create new technological systems from the ground up

  • You care deeply about user privacy and data governance

  • You’re willing to tackle new challenges and new responsibilities as the company grows

  • You have a passion for creating innovative AI experiences, and you’re enthusiastic to lay the groundwork for our product teams to harness the power of AI.
