Job Description
Technicon Design is seeking a Studio Engineer in the Bay Area, California to provide engineering services supporting industrial design for production programs and future concepts, focusing on vehicle interiors and exteriors. The role involves providing expert engineering input on design concepts for technical feasibility (packaging, sensor integration, manufacturability, cost, timing) and identifying potential show-stopper tradeoffs before presentation to cross-functional teams. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional partners, TPMs, and product managers to drive design convergence throughout development stages, managing CAD imports and exports for designers. Key responsibilities include reviewing surface releases, hosting working meetings, building physical mockups and prototypes, communicating design intent and technical requirements, creating mechanical concept CAD using Catia, and documenting design requirements and surface releases.

The studio engineer will provide studio engineering services to support industrial design of production programs and future concept generation around:
● Vehicle interior
● Vehicle exterior
The studio engineer shall provide expert engineering input on design concepts within the studio before concepts are presented to other cross functional teams. This helps maintain a high standard for work leaving the Industrial Design studio.
Input to include:
● Overall technical feasibility assessment: packaging, sensor integration, manufacturability, cost, timing, etc.
● Noting potential tradeoffs that may be show stoppers The studio engineer shall collaborate with cross functional engineering partners, TPMs, and product managers to help drive design convergence between internal teams throughout proportion, theme, alpha, and beta development.
● Import WIP CAD from engineering and share surfaces with designers
● Export designer a-surfaces to engineering for WIP and official releases
● Gather, comprehend, and discuss technical requirement with engineers and designs so all teams may converge on optimal designs and make tradeoff decisions as needed. The studio engineer shall build functional and aesthetic concept prototypes throughout design development for design development and technical evaluations.
Deliverables
Studio engineering deliverables are tied to overall industrial design team deliverables for vehicle development. Examples include:
● Review A surface releases to engineering
● Host recurring working meetings with cross functional teams to drive development and ensure teams are aligned throughout development lifecycles
● Build physical mockups and prototypes as needed
● Communicate clear design intent, technical requirements, with illustrations in slide format is a recurring deliverable for studio engineering
● Create mechanical concept CAD utilizing Catia to ensure designer concepts can be executed by engineering. Provide feedback to designers as needed to mature concepts.
● Document and release a surfaces to engineering through Enovia and presentation slides
● Document design requirements that influence industrial design of the vehicle.
Potential compensation - $80/hr and up, depending on experience level.
