Tesla's Supply Chain Cost Engineering team seeks a Cost Engineer to support the development and maintenance of value-added sourcing and component lifecycle cost control. Responsibilities include managing direct materials costing analytics, developing analytic tools, collaborating with cross-functional teams (industrialization, finance, design engineering), supporting product design from a cost perspective, participating in design reviews and change control meetings, monitoring industry trends, driving cost-down opportunities, performing data analysis, and developing data models, dashboards, and pipelines. The role requires strong analytical skills, proficiency in SQL, Python/R/Tableau, and advanced Excel capabilities, along with a deep understanding of manufacturing processes and cost modeling.
Must have:
  • 5+ years cost engineering experience in manufacturing supply chain
  • Technical understanding of vehicle manufacturing processes
  • Should-Cost model development and cost forecasting
  • Advanced SQL, Python/R/Tableau, and advanced Excel skills
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and financial modeling

Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.  Tesla’s Supply Chain Cost Engineering team sits at the intersection of supply chain financial analysis, business intelligence, data engineering, and data science to support this mission by converting raw data into actionable insights.  The Cost Engineer role will support the development and maintenance of value-added sourcing and component life cycle cost control.  This role requires the management of direct materials costing analytics within the purchasing organization and will involve developing and enhancing analytic tools and methodologies to support data-driven decision-making throughout the supply chain.  We are looking for a talented Cost Engineer who is passionate about analytics, automation, and business decision-making.  You will manage and lead direct material component cost development and costing analytics with the Supply Chain organization and collaborate across the business with industrialization, finance, and design engineering teams. 

What You’ll Do
  • Support the develop the existing should cost model. Keep expanding that with nuances from each global territory from where Tesla parts are sourced and integrate further supplier base specifics.
  • Owner of the RFQ landed should cost within direct materials procurement.
  • The to-go person for understanding component cost constructions and cost variances driven by different applied technologies, design, and supply regions.
  • Early involvement in product design to support driving supply strategies from a cost opportunity perspective. Support defining piece price and tooling negotiation strategy.
  • Participate in Design for Manufacturing reviews, change control meetings, and other technical discussions with buyers and engineering partners.
  • Monitor global industry trends and track technology roadmaps. Collect and maintain regional OpEx and CapEx data necessary for cost modeling including labor rates, machine rates, machine costs, etc.
  • Together with buyers, drive cost-down opportunities for new and running programs.
  • Perform rigorous analyses on large, complex data sets and provide strategic insights, hypotheses, and conclusions based upon findings to leaders at all levels.
  • Work with business operations and engineering teams to drive the development of Tesla’s data, reporting, and analytics platforms.
  • Design, develop, implement, maintain, and improve data models, forecast models, dashboards, and data pipelines to streamline data analysis and reporting processes.
  • Create a clean, reliable, and scalable single source of truth data sets by partnering with data quality and application engineering teams to address data issues in upstream systems and document data lineage, business logic, and KPI definitions.
  • Help automate manual workflows, and train team members and stakeholders on the use of new analytic tools and dashboards to support data-driven decision-making.

What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Statistics, Data Analytics, Finance, Engineering, Supply Chain or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in cost engineering and affinity with manufacturing supply chain.
  • Technical & commercial understanding of manufacturing processes on end-to-end vehicle manufacturing.
  • Experience with engineering concepts and ability to generate bottom-up costs based on the understanding of the manufacturing process. Analytical with the ability to build out Should-Cost models and cost forecasts.
  • Proficient knowledge of technical requirements & design of the product and be able to influence cross-functional partners with detailed analysis that supports optimized pricing and product sourcing decisions.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and experience with commercial and emerging BI databases, technologies, and languages.
  • Experience with data analytics tools and languages (Python, R, Tableau).
  • Experience with advanced Excel BI functionality and languages (Power Query, PowerPivot).
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements and financial modeling.
  • Ability to self-start and self-direct work in an unstructured environment, comfortable dealing with ambiguity.
  • Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with cross-function teams.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
