An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Electrical Controls and Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer to join EC&I Systems and Safety department at Rolls-Royce Submarines.

We’re a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority.

Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.

The EC&I Systems and Safety department develops the system design, safety case and information assurance case for the Reactor Control and Instrumentation, Power Systems and Plant Sensors for future classes of submarine. It is also involved in the design of key test facilities for the naval nuclear propulsion plant and your initial focus will be on the design, justification, manufacture and commissioning of one such facility.

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home or another remote location.  It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing:

You will be working as part of the Neptune EC&I team where you will:

  • Work with key stakeholders to integrate and manage system requirements.
  • Design, specify for manufacture, test and commission both bespoke and commercial Electrical Control and Instrumentation systems.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation to a standard compatible with engineering best practice.
  • Carry out occasional site working to conduct design reviews, investigations, equipment trials, commissioning and upgrade activities.

Who we’re looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do.  These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

  • HND / Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent level of continuous professional development and experience.
  • Experience of engineering design to commercial standards within the electrical, control or automation industries.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in Controls and Instrumentation systems and architecture.
  • Professional attitude and strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

Preferable:

  • Experience in selection and practical implementation of instrumentation solutions.
  • Experience in power system design for control applications.
  • Experience in testing, setting to work and commissioning of C&I systems.
  • Understanding of the implementation of UKCA compliance (previously CE) and relevant European directives (Machinery, Low Voltage and Electromagnetic Compatibility).
  • Understanding of functional safety (IEC 13849, 61508/11).

We are an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
