Job Description

Tesla's Power Electronics group seeks a skilled Team Lead to manage a team of 6-8 mechanical engineers. Responsibilities include leading the team, providing technical and organizational guidance, establishing clear goals, fostering collaboration, designing power electronics converters for automotive and energy storage applications, and managing hardware from specification to high-volume manufacturing. The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams and complete ownership of hardware development. The ideal candidate will have a PhD or MS in Mechanical Engineering and at least 4 years of relevant experience managing mechanical design engineers in power converter design.
Must Have:
  • PhD/MS in Mechanical Engineering
  • 4+ years experience managing Mechanical Design Engineers
  • Power converter hardware design experience
  • High-volume manufacturing knowledge
  • GD&T, FEA, design for reliability expertise
  • CAD (3D Experience), simulation tools (ANSYS, MATLAB) proficiency

What to Expect

Tesla’s Power Electronics group is looking for a skilled and motivated Team Lead to manage a team of 6-8 mechanical engineers to design and develop Power Electronics hardware intended to be used in Tesla energy products. You will be in charge to motivate the team, assist them wherever needed and make sure, that design and project targets are met.  

What You’ll Do
  • You are the first point of contact for any technical and organizational topics within the team 

  • Lead and mentor a team of mechanical design engineers, providing guidance, coaching, and support to foster professional growth and development 

  • Establish clear goals and objectives for the team, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives 

  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives 

  • Design and build hardware of power electronics converters for use in automotive and energy storage applications  

  • Start to finish ownership of hardware – from specification to design, prototype, reliability validation and high-volume manufacturing  

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including technical program managers, dimensional engineers, and manufacturing teams, to drive project success 

What You’ll Bring
  • PhD or MS in Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability  

  • 4 or more years of relevant hands-on hardware experience in power converters or similar design while managing a team of Mechanical Design Engineers 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders  

  • Experience with high volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stamping, diecast, etc.  

  • Knowledge of GD&T, finite element analysis, and design for reliability concepts  

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., 3D Experience) and familiarity with simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, MATLAB) as well as PLM systems, engineering changes, BOM structuring, etc.  

  • Familiar with PCBAs and PCBA components as well as basic comprehension of electrical design fundamentals
