Radical Forge, a Middlesbrough, UK-based developer known for AAA and indie co-development, is seeking a Technical Artist. This role will support the art team on internal and co-development projects, reporting to the Lead Artist and production, with interaction with engineering and design. The position offers growth in Unity, Unreal Engine, and custom game engines. Responsibilities include pipeline development, art optimization, tool and script creation for workflow streamlining, shader development, communicating technical requirements, mentoring artists, troubleshooting art-related issues, and documenting processes. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience as a Technical Artist in a games studio, focusing on shader and tool development.

Radical Forge is a Middlesbrough, UK-based developer that has provided co-development services on a range of AAA and indie titles. In 2021 the company created their first original IP, 'Bright Paw', which was published on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One/Series S/X, Google and iOS by Rogue Games. We are currently working on our newest IP, Southfield, which you can look forward to playing soon!!

Your Mission

Radical Forge is hiring a Technical Artist to support the art team on several exciting internal and co-development projects. You will report to the Lead Artist as well as to production, but you will also have day to day interaction with engineering and design. The role will allow growth and skill development across many areas of interactive development and project / art styles in Unity, Unreal Engine and potentially custom game engines.

Responsibilities

  • Pipeline development and art optimization
  • Tool and script development to support the art team and streamline workflows
  • Shader development
  • Communicate technical requirements to the art team and mentor artists where appropriate
  • Troubleshoot and resolve art related issues
  • Document pipelines, procedures and processes

Skills Summary

  • The candidate is able to work remotely within the UK, and can evidence pre-existing right to work within the UK.
  • Experienced in development in Unity (primary) and Unreal Engine (secondary)
  • 3-5 years experience as a Tech Artist in a games studio with focus on shader and tool development
  • Portfolio demonstrating relevant experience in some of the above areas
  • Strong understanding of 3D pipelines and 3D software (eg Maya, Max, Blender, Substance suite)
  • Experience with lighting and post processing
  • VFX / particle creation
  • Shader development experience (Unity Shadergraph / Amplify and UE Material Editor)
  • Solid understanding of runtime performance costs and asset optimisation techniques
  • Able to follow art direction and debug / troubleshoot issues related to game assets, effects etc
  • Understanding of managing assets in a versioning system (ideally Perforce)
  • Collaborate with engineering and design teams to implement gameplay specific art assets
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


This role can be fully remote within the UK. 

We will require all applicants to have a pre-existing right to work in the UK.

 The role will initially be a 12 month Fixed Term contract with the potential to extend after this.
