Weather Simulation Engineer

Do you have an innate interest in leveraging your weather/meteorological simulation background to build true, physics-based digital twins? PassiveLogic is looking for a highly motivated and dedicated candidate who wants to learn from the best and stretch their skills.

About PassiveLogic

PassiveLogic is the first fully autonomous platform for buildings. We’ve reinvented the fundamental principles of automation to democratize technology, optimize buildings, and reduce the world’s carbon footprint. We are a team of technologists, engineers, and creatives dedicated to making a sustainable impact through deployable solutions.

We are looking for team members who have a passion for technology and who want to work on cutting-edge problems with real-world applications. Our culture is built on empowering people through generative autonomy to solve the world’s largest climate challenges. Backed by the world’s leading investors, our team works daily to make the future of smart cities a reality.

About the Role

This is a career-defining opportunity to play a crucial role in a hyper-scale AI company that is transforming the future of autonomous systems, energy, and the built environment.

As a Weather Simulation Engineer on the Computational Physics team at PassiveLogic, you will play a pivotal role in developing advanced weather simulation models that integrate with our Digital Twin platform. You will be responsible for creating accurate and high-fidelity weather simulations to enable precise analysis and optimization of building systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in meteorology, data science, and simulation techniques, along with a passion for pushing the boundaries of technology.

What you’ll do

  • Climate modeling: Design, implement, and optimize weather simulation, meteorological, and microclimate models.
  • Weather prediction: Provide weather prediction with contexts ranging from having an internet connection with forecast API access to no internet connection and only using locally observable information to forecast weather.
  • Autonomous agents: Develop an autonomous agent that combines data fusion with continuous model learning to enhance prediction accuracy.
  • Digital twin integration: Integrate weather simulation into PassiveLogic’s digital twins and control path predictor platform.
  • Object modeling: Develop an interface with the object model through Object Relational Mapping.
  • Data analysis: Analyze historical and real-time weather data and validate simulation results.
  • Optimization: Continuously optimize simulation algorithms for performance and scalability.
  • Documentation: Create thorough and clear documentation for weather simulation models, algorithms, and integration processes.

What you’ll bring

If your experience does not meet all our posted requirements below, we’d still love to hear from you. We are looking for practitioners who are passionate about understanding people, committed to lifelong learning, and driven by the love of what they do. If that’s you, please apply!

You must have

  • Proven experience:
    • MS or Ph.D. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Physics, Computer Science, Applied Math, or a related field.
    • You have developed and implemented weather simulation models from physics-based numerical models to AI and hybrid techniques.
    • Strong programming skills, with proficiency in languages such as Swift, Python, Java, or C++.
  • Exceptional communication skills: Excellent interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Organized and strategic: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborative mindset: Open to feedback and committed to a continuous improvement process.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment, eager to learn, iterate, and innovate.
  • Problem solving: You own this role. When issues arise, be the empowered force that solves them, rolling-up.

You should have

  • Meteorology and data science expertise: Strong background in meteorology, data science, and simulation techniques.
  • High-performance computing experience: Experience in high-performance computing.
  • Mathematical proficiency: Strong math, numerical methods, and analysis skills.

It’s helpful to have

  • Startup experience: Experience in fast-paced startup environments.
  • Autonomous systems expertise: Experience in designing, simulating, or deploying autonomous systems.
  • Swift programming proficiency: Practical experience with the Swift programming language.
  • Auto-differentiation skills: Experience with auto-differentiation and differentiable programming.
  • Sustainability and technology interest: Interest in sustainability, machine learning, energy systems, or mechanical-electrical control.

We know there are candidates who might not fit everything we’ve described above, or who might have experience and skills we haven’t considered. PassiveLogic can sometimes be flexible enough to shift responsibilities to the right person, or otherwise identify open or upcoming roles that may better fit your professional background. Even if you don’t meet all the requirements above, we still want to hear from you.

Compensation, Benefits & Perks:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Generous equity share package
  • Medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Disability and Life Insurance options
  • Flex PTO
  • Team-building events
  • Free catered lunch in the office Monday - Friday
  • Free ski pass (We are at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon)
  • Free National Park pass

When applying, include:

  • A cover letter telling us why you're the perfect candidate for PassiveLogic
  • A resume
  • Extra mile — include a description of a project (of any type) you personally created, devised, built, managed, organized, or designed that was of your own self-initiative
