Job Description

Cartoon Saloon is seeking a Blender Generalist for their new feature film. The role involves creating clean and efficient models and FX, working with Blender Grease Pencil, and understanding 3D for 2D workflows. Responsibilities include adjusting existing builds, interpreting concept art, taking direction, optimizing models, maintaining quality, working within a team, and adhering to production protocols. The candidate will collaborate with the Art Director(s) and Production Manager, ensuring timely delivery of assets and contributing to team meetings. They must be available during working hours for communication. The role is full-time and on-site in Kilkenny, Ireland. They will also be expected to keep the information relating to projects confidential and secure. The candidate must also deliver technically clearly named and well layered files following established protocols.
Must have:
  • Proficiency in Modeling/UV unwrapping, texture painting, NPR shading and rendering, Grease Pencil and Blender Line Art
  • Strong artistic skills and understanding of 3D modeling techniques.
  • Ability to closely follow briefs from Art Director(s)
  • Good team player and communicator.
  • Strong time-management skills.
Good to have:
  • Experience in Animation, FX simulations, Geometry Nodes is a plus.
  • Experience on features would be a plus, but not essential

Cartoon Saloon, established in 1999 by Paul Young, Tomm Moore, and Nora Twomey, is a world renowned animation studio with five Academy Award® and two Golden Globe® nominations and many award wins including BAFTA® and Emmy®. Located in Kilkenny, Ireland, the studio produces brave and beautiful shorts, feature films, and TV series. Cartoon Saloon is the founder and host of Kilkenny Animated, an annual festival of visual storytelling incorporating exhibitions, talks and performances celebrating the creativity of the animation craft.

Position

  • To produce clean and efficient models and FX that meet the technical and creative brief provided
  • To work using Blender Grease Pencil with an understanding & knowledge of 2D Animation
  • To understand 3D for 2D, or "non photorealistic" (NPR) workflows
  • Adjust existing builds and create new ones under the guidance of the Art Director (s)
  • To have a clear understanding of 3D modeling techniques and effects, and ability to interpret concept art
  • To take direction and respond well to notes and pitch creative/technical solutions to potential problems
  • Responsible for optimising, refining and delivering a correct model in line with the brief from the Art Director (s)
  • Ensuring quality and style consistency is maintained within the feature project
  • Working cohesively within a team environment and ensure high levels of communication at all times
  • Adhering to the production tools used for tracking workflow, input and delivery/output of scenes
  • Open to share with the team processes and assets that could help with continuity and productivity
  • To work under the supervision and guidance of the Art Director (s) and Production Manager
  • To work with relevant Production Coordinator/s to ensure the status of your work is known, allowing them to track the progression of assets
  • To deliver technically clearly named and well layered files following established protocols
  • To attend departmental kick-off meetings and reviews as needed.
  • Work according to the expected schedule
  • Address any problems and communicate progress of work to the Supervisor and Coordinator
  • Promote a good work ethic and positive atmosphere within the team
  • Assist in keeping information relation to the projects confidential and secure
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and trainings as needed
  • Be available on Google Chat and by emails during working hours
  • This list is not exhaustive and might be complemented by reasonable and related tasks that are requested of you

Requirements

  • Min. 2 years previous experience on features would be a plus, but not essential
  • Proficiency in Modelling/ UV unwrapping, Texture painting, NPR shading and rendering, Grease Pencil and Blender Line Art
  • Strong artistic skills, understanding of 3D modeling techniques and ability to interpret concept art
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of animation process & pipeline
  • Ability to closely follow briefs from Art Director (s)
  • Good team player and communicator
  • Strong time-management skills
  • Must be able to take direction, respond well to notes and pitch creative/technical solutions to potential problems
  • Experience in Animation, FX simulations, Geometry Nodes is a plus but not essential.
