Mob Entertainment is seeking a Contract Senior Environment Artist to join their agile team, focusing on creating realistic atmospheric environments for horror games. The role involves working on all aspects of the environment art pipeline, from design to applying principles of composition, form, light, and color to enhance psychological tension, while ensuring performance and scalability. The artist will design and build immersive interior spaces, own full environment scenes from blockout to polish, and use modularity techniques for Unreal Engine assets. Collaboration with the team to maintain the "Poppy Playtime" style and providing feedback on environmental execution are key responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong portfolio in realistic horror environment art, excellent art fundamentals, and experience mentoring junior artists.
Must have:
  • Strong portfolio of realistic horror environments
  • Proficiency in art fundamentals (composition, lighting, form)
  • Experience mentoring junior artists
  • Knowledge of Niagara and VFX pipelines
  • Understanding of dynamic lighting workflows
  • Ability to work from reference and narrative briefs
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Understanding of horror visual language
Good to have:
  • Experience with Substance Designer
  • Experience with world-building tools in Unreal Engine
  • Experience with Unreal Engine's Niagara Particle systems

Mob Entertainment is a startup multimedia studio that is best known for our hit indie horror game "Poppy Playtime".  This franchise is one of the hottest new properties in gaming, and our team is naturally expanding as our ambition expands.  To give a taste of our brand's popularity, more than 100 billion YouTube views of Poppy Playtime related content have occured since the game's launch 4 years ago. 

 

As an Environment Artist, you’ll be joining a small agile team at mob.This role will have you working closely with the team to deliver realistic atmospheric environments for horror games. You’ll touch all aspects of the environment art pipeline, from designing interior spaces to applying advanced understanding of composition, form, light, and color to amplify psychological tension - all while upholding performance, scalability and clarity. 

This role is for those looking to be a part of a close knit team working to deliver exceptional horror experiences. 

 

What You’ll Do:

● Design and build realistic, atmospheric environments for horror games, with a focus on grounded, immersive interior spaces 

● Own full environment scenes from blockout to final polish, using strong modeling, texturing, and lighting fundamentals to deliver emotionally resonant and narratively rich spaces. 

● Utilize modularity, trimming, and reusability techniques to build flexible, performant assets and environments that work within Unreal Engine. 

● Work closely with the team to deliver on the vision while maintaining the hallmark Poppy Playtime style. 

● Provide feedback on environment execution across pods, helping reinforce artistic quality and alignment with the overall horror tone. 

 

Requirements & Skills:

● Strong portfolio demonstrating mastery of environment set dressing, modeling and texturing for realistic, horror-inspired spaces (preferably interiors). 

● Solid foundation in art fundamentals: composition, lighting, form, color, shape, and value control. 

● Strong experience in guiding and mentoring junior artists, with a high level of communication skills and collaborative mindset 

● Working knowledge of Niagara and VFX Pipelines, with an eye for integrating subtle atmospheric effects to reinforce mood and immersion 

● Understanding of dynamic lighting workflows, including optimization techniques for performance and scalability in Unreal Engine 

● Comfortable working from reference and narrative briefs to develop grounded and immersive world-building. 

● Ability to clearly articulate artistic goals, provide constructive feedback, and support growth of less experienced team members 

● Understanding of horror visual language, mood construction, and how to manipulate space, scale, and detail to create discomfort or suspense.

● Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a willingness to iterate based on feedback and team needs. 

 

Bonus Skills:

● Experience with Substance Designer, and world-building tools within Unreal Engine. 

● Understanding and experience with Unreal Engine’s Niagara Particle systems and VFX
