POLITICO's California team is seeking an editorial intern for Fall 2025. The intern will be based in the Sacramento office and will play a key role in covering politics and policy in California. Responsibilities include pitching, reporting, and writing stories for both a California and national audience. The role involves covering news in the state capitol, contributing to the California Playbook newsletter, and participating in all aspects of content creation, including research, reporting, writing, editing, and aggregation. A significant amount of this work will be in early morning hours.

POLITICO's California team is seeking an editorial intern for Fall 2025. The intern will work from our Sacramento office and will play a critical role in our coverage of politics and policy in the nation's largest state.

Internship date ranges and application deadlines:

Application Deadline: June 20, 2025 at 5:00pm PST
Internship Dates: September 2025 – December 2025
Hours: 40 Per Week for those who are not enrolled in college or university; 20 Per Week for college students.
Compensation: $23/HR

What You'll Do:

  • Pitch, report and write stories of consequence, both for our audience of influential professionals in California and POLITICO's wider national readership
  • Cover spot news in policy and politics in and around the state capitol
  • Work with our California Playbook team to write and produce our daily newsletter on politics in the Golden State
  • The intern will be involved in all aspects of content creation and production, including research, reporting, writing, editing and aggregating. A significant amount of this work will be in early morning hours

What You'll Need:

  • A can-do attitude, initiative, good time management and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Strong critical thinking skills and a desire to not only develop your own story ideas but explain their broader meaning to a sophisticated audience.
  • The ability to write quickly and cleanly while on deadline
  • Prior hands-on experience as an intern at a professional news outlet and, ideally, experience working on a student publication
  • A passion for politics and policy and a thirst to learn about California politics and government
  • A commitment to fair-minded, nonpartisan journalism
