Job Description

Microsoft's CO&I EPC team seeks a Mechanical Supplier Quality Engineer to ensure high-quality datacenter infrastructure. Responsibilities include conducting supplier audits, evaluating manufacturing processes, monitoring performance using KPIs, reviewing documentation (test reports, inspection records), leading part qualification, driving factory acceptance testing (FAT) and factory witness testing (FWT), leading Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for quality issues, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders (supply chain, engineering, construction, vendors) to align supplier quality expectations with project requirements. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in mechanical engineering and experience in quality assurance within a manufacturing or construction environment.

Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects.  The CO&I Supply Chain Quality team is seeking a methodical and innovative Mechanical Supplier Quality Engineer to support the AMER region with a passion for problem solving, process improvements, helping others, technology, and manufacturing operations. You would join a team that works to ensure the delivery of high-quality, compliant equipment through active collaboration with suppliers at their factory and quality engineers across regions.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field
    • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lean 6 Sigma Greenbelt / Gemba experience.
  • Technical experience with data center operations, Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC), or mission critical equipment.
  • ASQ Certification.
  • Experience in thermal management products.

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year. Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

Supplier Quality Assurance

  • Conduct supply audits to ensure compliance with Microsoft's quality standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices
  • Evaluate and approve supplier manufacturing processes, test protocols/ scripts, and quality control procedures for mechanical equipment
  • Monitor supplier performance using data-driven KPIs and collaborate with suppliers to address deviations and implement corrective actions.

Inspection and Testing Oversight

  • Review supplier provided documentation, including test reports and inspection records, to ensure product quality and traceability
  • Leads part qualification processes through implementation of product quality plans and equipment inspections
  • Drive factory acceptance testing (FAT), factory witness testing (FWT), and in process inspections to verify equipment performance against design specifications and standards
  • Collaborate with suppliers to improve testing methodologies, and product quality to ensure consistency and quality outcomes

Issue Resolution and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) efforts for supplier related quality issues, ensuring timely resolution and prevention of reoccurrence
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives with suppliers enhanced product quality, manufacturing efficiency, and delivery performance
  • Collaborating with stakeholders (e.g. supply chain, engineering, construction, vendors, etc.) to align supplier quality expectations with project requirements
