The Android Platform Compatibility team ensures a consistent platform and application API surface across the range of Android devices including phones, tablets, TV, automotive, and emerging verticals. We drive compatibility by defining minimum hardware requirements, establishing platform standards by technology or feature area, and enforcing these through compatibility testing. We also work closely with OEM manufacturers worldwide to build and certify compatible Android devices. Our ultimate goal is to support Android application developers at scale by ensuring uniform platform implementations across billions of compatible Android devices, allowing apps to run seamlessly across different brands and form factors.
This team plays a critical role in expanding Android into new verticals, collaborating with Google Engineering teams to align with existing platform policies and conventions. We help onboard new product areas into the Android ecosystem and define new requirements or enablement pathways for novel experiences introduced by these emerging product categories.
