Job Description

The Policy Development Lead for Child Safety at YouTube is a crucial role within the Trust & Safety team. This position requires developing and maintaining global policies focused on child safety, understanding the related risk landscape and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include evaluating the risk profile of new products and features, influencing stakeholders regarding policy efforts, negotiating policy solutions balancing safety and growth, and working with global teams for effective policy implementation. The role involves reviewing potentially graphic or offensive content and proposing strategies to improve the Trust & Safety product's market fit, addressing evolving online content risks. The ideal candidate will possess strong policy, legal, or tech experience, familiarity with child development, and excellent communication skills.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years policy drafting/enforcement experience
  • 5+ years experience in policy, legal, or tech environment

Job Details

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in drafting or enforcing policy for an online platform or engagement with public policy issues in technology, government, law or online.
  • 5 years of experience in a policy, legal, Trust & Safety, or technology environment.
  • Experience working with global teams and communicating with stakeholders cross-functionally and experience engaging in and discussing sensitive or controversial areas.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience on topics related to assessing the risk landscape and regulatory requirements unique to child safety or youth physical or psychological safety.
  • Experience with childhood development and behavior or psychology of minors aged 17 and under.
  • Experience working with minors aged 17 and under or on topics related to child development.
  • Exceptional written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.

As a Policy Development Lead, you will switch between developing global policies for YouTube content and driving cross-functional projects impacting the global ecosystem. You will bring order and clarity to unstructured or ambiguous problems. The Policy team covers a wide variety of topics, and you will contribute across multiple areas. This role will involve reviewing graphic, controversial, or offensive video content in line with YouTube’s .

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $129,000-$191,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and update our global policies focused on child safety policy and understand and communicate the risk landscape and regulatory requirements unique to child safety.
  • Evaluate the risk profile of new products and features. Influence cross-functional stakeholders and company executives regarding proposed content policy efforts.
  • Negotiate and find optimal policy solutions balancing safety and product reach and growth objectives, and work with global teams to ensure effective operationalization of global policies.
  • Propose new strategies and policies to improve the Trust & Safety product market fit to the evolving needs as well as our ability to scale our enforcement.
  • Understand and clearly communicate the policy challenges and needs presented by new features and emerging global online content risks.
