Microsoft seeks a Principal Network Engineer to architect, design, maintain, and operate their global datacenter networking platform. This role involves collaborating with internal and external teams to ensure customer and business requirements are met while adhering to SLAs. Responsibilities include developing reliable, scalable, high-performance network designs, partnering with engineering and program management, modifying and improving network technologies, analyzing traffic patterns, reviewing network architecture for risks and improvements, operating networking solutions, and developing automation tools. Troubleshooting complex issues and defining telemetry analytics are also key responsibilities. The role involves working with MPLS VPN, BGP, cloud network technologies (Express Route, Load Balancers, Firewalls), and various networking hardware.
Must have:
  • 9+ years experience in network design, development, and automation or relevant degree and experience
  • Proficient in BGP, MPLS VPN, Anycast, VLAN/Spanning Tree, TCP/IP, DNS, network security
  • Experience with cloud network technologies (Express Route, Load Balancers, Firewalls)
  • Design and implement secure network architectures
  • Develop reliable, scalable, high-performance network designs
Good to have:
  • Advanced knowledge of Juniper and Arista network operating systems
  • Extensive experience with BGP, IS-IS, IPv4/IPv6 routing, MPLS traffic engineering

Overview

Are you interested in designing and operating sophisticated network solutions? Microsoft recently acquired Xandr’s Real-Time-Bidding platform and is transitioning to a hybrid environment of MPLS VPN based Global On-Prem Network and Cloud Networking. We have an MPLS traffic engineered global backbone with 100 Gigabit private connections between our On-Prem data centers and cloud network. We collaborate across multiple divisions of Microsoft to develop and implement unique network solutions.


As a Principal Network Engineer specializing in Datacenter Networking, you will architect, design, maintain and operate the global datacenter networking platform. You will collaborate with internal and external teams, as well as industry partners, to ensure that customer and business requirements are met while upholding our Service Level Agreements (SLAs). This role provides an opportunity for you to leverage and expand your expertise in large-scale networking while driving the effort to enhance the resilience, performance and security of our networking solutions. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 9+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field AND 6+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
    • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 4+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
    • OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
  • 3+ years of knowledge and understanding of network concepts. Proficient in BGP, MPLS VPN, Anycast routing, VLAN/Spanning Tree, TCP/IP, DNS(Domain Name Services), network security and virtualization core technologies based on hands-on experience.
  • 3+ years of experience working with other teams and services to design and implement secure network architectures.
  • 3+ years of experience deploying and troubleshooting key cloud network technologies (Express Route, Load balancer, Application load balancers, Firewall).

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of network operating systems including Juniper, Arista.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with BGP and IS-IS routing protocols, IPv4 and IPv6 routing policy and MPLS traffic engineering.
  • Experience managing routing policies for diverse and multiple providers, high-capacity IP transit, private peering and public exchange point interconnection.
  • Knowledge of networking hardware including twisted pair and optical cabling, L2 switches and routers.

 

Cloud Network Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • You develop reliable, scalable, and high-performance, network designs and produce design documents and implementation plans for networking solutions. You partner with Engineering and Program Management teams to understand customer, business, and technical requirements to propose network designs or modifications to architecture; participation in architecture reviews to ensure designs and modifications meet all functional, performance, scale, and compliance requirements.
  • You offer modification and improvements to network technologies based on existing and emerging industry knowledge to contribute to the design, implementation, and operation of reliable, scalable, and high-performance networks. You analyze traffic patterns across complete network infrastructures to identify needs to modify capacity. You continuously review the network architecture to identify risks and determine improvements as well as measures to ensure highest network security.
  • You operate networking solutions with the highest quality bar and invest in developing and deploying robust automation tools that increase engineering efficiency, minimize operational burden, and reduce human errors, while optimizing the utilization of infrastructure and resources. You define telemetry analytics and quality metrics to drive new data collection instrumentation that can improve the detection and troubleshooting of problems. You troubleshoot and repair complex multi-layer incident issues.
