As a Senior Controls Engineer – Technical Services at Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin, you'll design, implement, and maintain control systems for facility infrastructure, including utilities and building systems supporting the manufacturing process. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, facilities, construction) to ensure system integration and optimization for efficiency, reliability, and safety. Responsibilities include developing control systems for process utilities, HVAC, electrical, and building automation; troubleshooting and resolving system issues; maintaining detailed documentation; and driving energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives. The role demands strong PLC and HMI programming skills (Siemens TIA Portal preferred), familiarity with various control system protocols, and expertise in high-level programming languages.
Must have:
  • 5+ years experience in control systems
  • Strong PLC & HMI programming (Siemens TIA Portal)
  • Profinet, Modbus, BACnet, OPC UA knowledge
  • C++, Python, or Java programming skills
  • Control systems and sensor expertise
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication
Good to have:
  • German language skills
  • Experience with Ignition SCADA

Our Gigafactory in Berlin is a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that will produce batteries, electric powertrains, and vehicles, and we are seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer to join our Facilities team.

 

Job Summary:
As a Senior Controls Engineer – Technical Services, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining control systems for the facilities and infrastructure at Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin. This includes all utilities and building systems that support the manufacturing process and make us a state-of-the-art facility.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, facilities, and construction to ensure that control systems are integrated and optimized for maximum efficiency, reliability, and safety. We’re seeking highly motivated candidates, willing to challenge the status quo and drive change to make an impact. 

What You’ll Do
  • Design, develop, and implement control systems for utility and building systems that support all production facilities and infrastructure. Examples include process utilities, HVAC, electrical, and building automation.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify problems or improvements. Define control system requirements and work out implementation strategies based upon those.
  • Write and maintain detailed documentation of control systems, including schematics, diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues, including debugging and repairing faulty systems
  • Demonstrate ownership over assigned systems from design to operation and drive system improvements.
  • Drive the development and implementation of energy efficiency, sustainability and reliability initiatives. Push the boundaries to make our factory better every day.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Software Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in control systems design, implementation, and maintenance, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting
  • Very strong programming knowledge of PLCs and HMIs in Siemens TIA Portal. Knowledge of programming SCADA systems, preferably Ignition.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard control system protocols such as Profinet, Modbus, RS232/485, BACnet, OPC UA.
  • Strong experience with high programming languages such as C++, Python or Java and knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
  • Strong knowledge of control systems, with control theory in continuous processes being preferable.
  • Solid understanding of sensors and their underlying working principles. Good knowledge of sensor setup, commissioning, and calibration.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex control system issues.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities and deadlines
  • Desire to stay up-to-date with developments and best practices in control systems. Willingness to dive down deep and drive developments to bring to the team.
  • Fluency in English, with German language skills as a strong plus
