Job Description

Media Molecule is seeking a Senior Materials Artist to join their team for a 12-month contract. You will be responsible for using procedural techniques to create complex, editable materials, building and maintaining the material asset pipeline, working with the Art team to maintain consistent high-quality materials, and creating custom tools and generators in Substance Designer and Painter. This role requires experience with at least one full game production cycle in a similar role, a strong understanding of Substance Designer and physically based rendering, and experience with 3D authoring software (Blender).

(Senior) Materials Artist - 12 month contract.

We are Media Molecule, a multi-award winning game developer and a proud member of the PlayStation Studios family. We have a history of creating revolutionary games such as LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway and most recently, the BAFTA Award winning Dreams. It’s a fantastic time to join us as we embark on our next adventure, defining and executing the vision for our next ambitious project and settling into our spectacular, newly refurbished studio in central Guildford. We are now searching for an exceptional (Senior) Materials Artist to join us! You will have a solid understanding of modern texturing/surfacing systems, will be comfortable following a concept in detail and able to apply your keen visual skills to a wide range of artistic styles.

Your main tasks and responsibilities are:

  • Use procedural techniques to create complex, editable materials
  • Build and maintain our material asset pipeline including optimisation for use in engine
  • Work with the Art team to maintain consistent high-quality materials throughout our games
  • Build custom tools in Substance Designer and build pipeline from Designer to other tools
  • Create custom generators, smart materials and brushes in Designer for use in Painter
  • Create documentation and tutorials to share with the wider team


What you'll bring:

  • Experience of at least one full game production cycle in a similar role
  • Ability to appreciate, respond to and provide constructive critique
  • Strong observational skills and ability to translate reference into Designer materials
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a cross disciplinary team
  • Extensive knowledge of Substance Designer
  • Solid understanding of physically based rendering
  • Solid understanding of Substance Painter
  • Production experience with 3D authoring software (Blender)
