As a Software Engineer II - Edge Compute Infrastructure, you'll contribute to the development of the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) for the US Army. This involves designing, implementing, and securing customized operating systems for edge compute devices operating in extreme environments. Responsibilities include working with stakeholders to define user requirements, designing and building Windows and Linux images (using tools like Packer and Docker), implementing code, adhering to DevOps practices, and creating CI/CD pipelines. You'll collaborate with internal and external partners and manage application integration and security requirements, including compliance with STIG processes. Experience with cloud technologies (Azure DevOps) is highly beneficial.

As a Software Engineer II - Edge Compute Infrastructure on the Mixed Reality Team, you will work on the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS). The United States Army has contracted Microsoft to prototype hardware, software, and cloud solutions for IVAS. The program leverages technology from HoloLens to design a heads-up display that pushes the boundaries of mixed reality devices. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and securing the customized operating systems that power our unique edge compute devices operating in extreme environments. You will work with a diverse set of internal and external partners balancing application integration and security requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience delivering commercial-quality software products for consumers or enterprises.

  • 2+ years of experience in building or administrating Windows Server systems.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 
  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations or Export Administration Regulations, the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status (e.g., under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information.  To meet this legal requirement, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate’s citizenship will be verified with a valid passport. Lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees may verify status using other documents, where applicable." 
  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship- based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local(or applicable country) United States government agency customers and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working experience as Full Stack Developer.
  • Experience with Azure Dev Ops build pipelines.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
    • Creating "golden images" of operating systems to be used by multiple teams
    • Packer
    • Docker
    • Patch management on disconnected systems
    • Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) process
  • Experience with Linux systems engineering and the automated creation of Linux "golden images."

 

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Work with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
  • Contribute to the identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
  • Design, build, secure, and automate creation of Windows native, virtual machine, and container images to be used by multiple teams.
  • Create and implement code for a product, service, or feature, reusing code as applicable. 
  • Contribute to efforts to break down larger work items into smaller work items and provide estimation.
  • Adhere to modern DevOps engineering practices, effective coding, writing unit test cases, debugging, code reviewing, and creating CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery) pipelines.
