About the role

As a Staff Software Engineer (Data), you will play a crucial role in shaping the technical vision and implementation of our data platform. You will work closely with the data team to build, maintain, and enhance our data infrastructure, ensuring low latency and scalability. In addition to supporting the BI and Analytics teams, you will be responsible for driving data quality improvements across the organization, which will enhance our decision-making processes and support business growth. You will implement the technical vision for our data platform, coordinating with and holding other engineers accountable as you all work to deliver that future-facing data platform; you will assist in the effort to shape the technology choices, standards and architectural considerations for Fortis’ data environment.

What you’ll achieve

  • Collaborate with the data team to develop and maintain a large-scale, low-latency data platform, while making critical business decisions to drive its strategic direction.
  • Ensure the platform supports real-time updates and holistic user views for various applications, including segmentation and analytics.
  • Independently gather business requirements, translate them into technical specs, and build corresponding applications on the data platform.
  • Set the standard by mentoring the team and actively influencing cross-functional initiatives.
  • Perform code reviews, and suggest enhancements to existing code.
  • Participate in the decision-making process related to data architecture.
  • Collaborate with BI, Analytics, Data Science and game teams in a dynamic environment.

What you’ll need to be successful

  • Hands-on experience in large-scale technical implementations and cloud-native data pipelines and stores.
  • Extensive experience with batch-based data warehousing technologies.
  • Strong experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in CI/CD deployment models.
  • A strong bias to action, while considering aspects such as data privacy, security and compliance with all relevant legislation.
  • Experience with Data Warehousing solutions like Snowflake/BigQuery/ClickHouse.
  • Experience with data transformation tools like DBT and practical knowledge of BI tools such as Looker.
  • Experience with workflow automation platforms such as Airflow, Prefect.
  • Familiarity with data streaming technologies like Kafka or Kinesis is strongly preferred. 
  • Proficiency with stream processing engines such as Flink or Spark, and with JVM languages such as Java, Scala and/or Kotlin is strongly preferred. 
  • Experience in developing and maintaining APIs for data services is strongly preferred.
