Job Description

As a Tools Programmer at Cloud Imperium Games, you'll be a key member of the graphics team, responsible for designing and implementing tools that empower programmers to build their ambitious space simulator games. This includes creating editors for constructing solar systems, data pipelines for managing massive datasets, and improving overall developer workflow. You will collaborate with designers, artists, engineers, and QA to solve complex problems, ensuring tools are robust, scalable, and user-friendly. The role requires proficiency in C++, experience with UI frameworks (QT/MFC), 3D math knowledge, and a passion for creating excellent user experiences. You'll need to effectively communicate technical solutions to both programmers and other team members.

As part of graphics team our Tools Programmers are the powerhouse behind the multitude of tools that empower/enable our programmers to build such ambitious and technologically advanced games. Delivering everything from slick editor tools for constructing a solar system, to the data pipelines to compress terabytes of geometry and textures, our tools programmers work closely with Designers, Artists, Engineers, QA and Production to solve a multitude of problems.

With the huge scale of our games and resulting complexity of technology it's built upon, it is critical that our tools empower developers to effortlessly realize their ambitions, whether that be constructing a million km wide asteroid belt or SOMETHING SMALL.

Founded in 2012, Cloud Imperium Games creates cutting-edge videogames that defy expectations. What does a Tools Programmer at CIG do?

  • Collaborate with other team members and disciplines to design and implement well-engineered, reliable, scalable and robust tool.
  • Identify internal technical and developmental risks and obstacles and apply latest techniques and solutions to overcome them.
  • Work to continuously improve user experience, capabilities and performance.
  • Peer-review technical designs and documentation with the help of the wider team.
     

What do we expect from our Tool Programmers?

  • Comfortable working with C++ in a large shared codebase.
  • Experience with UI frameworks, such as QT and/or MFC would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with 3D math.
  • Passion for creating a great UX.
  • Ability to iterate and improve workflow through innovative problem solving.
  • Ability to work in an agile, cross-functional environment.
  • Effective at explaining and presenting technical solutions to both programmers and team members from other disciplines.

About The Company

Cloud Imperium Games is a new kind of independent studio dedicated to delivering AAA experiences outside the established publisher system, founded by Chris Roberts, creator of the best selling Wing Commander and Freelancer series, Cloud Imperium is currently developing Star Citizen, a record-shattering crowd funded title that combines classic space sim gameplay with Hollywood-caliber visuals.


Cloud Imperium aims to pave new ground in game development by sharing the process with the players. Where game development was once hidden, Cloud Imperium has opted to share the process with those backing Star Citizen. Supporters come to know the team and follow them every step of the way as the game created. The community is closely engaged and their feedback Is considered in all aspects of game development, avoiding standard publicity to put Roberts’ epic vision directly in players’ hands.
