Grammarly is seeking an Analytical Linguist to join its Core Product team. This role involves utilizing AI technologies, including machine learning and generative AI, to enhance writing feedback. The Analytical Linguist will define product feature behavior based on research and data analysis, curate datasets, and develop generative AI capabilities. Responsibilities include researching linguistic and communication issues, analyzing user feedback for product improvement, curating datasets for AI development with annotation guidelines and quality control, leveraging NLP technologies and LLMs, collaborating with engineers and researchers on NLP tasks, and developing/improving scripts for data processing related to generative AI.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in linguistics
  • Team player with data and linguistic annotation experience
  • Fluent English, excellent grammar
  • Positive, organized, detail-oriented
  • 2+ years industry experience as Analytical Linguist
  • Proficient in scripting languages (Python)
  • Experience with research processes
  • Experience with annotated corpora and crowdsourcing

The Opportunity

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for an Analytical Linguist to join our Core Product team. We use a combination of AI technologies to drive our high-quality writing feedback, including machine learning and generative AI. Analytical Linguists are essential to ensuring that our communication features provide high-quality and actionable suggestions for our users. In this role, you will define the expected behavior of our product features drawing from research and data analysis. You will also curate datasets and develop key generative AI capabilities.

Grammarly’s engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs—and, in turn, influence our product roadmap. As an Analytical Linguist, you will:

  • Conduct research on a number of linguistic and communication issues (e.g., different modes, genres, and styles of writing).
  • Analyze user feedback to improve our product offering and identify linguistic solutions to user problems.
  • Curate datasets for AI development, including designing annotation guidelines, performing quality control, and generating synthetic data.
  • Leverage existing NLP technologies and AI solutions, including LLMs.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, applied research scientists, computational linguists, and product managers on complex solutions to natural language processing tasks.
  • Work with, develop, and improve scripts to process data associated with our generative AI and annotation needs.

Qualifications

  • Has at least a bachelor’s degree in linguistics.
  • Is a team player who enjoys spending time with data, linguistic annotation, and evaluation.
  • Speaks and writes English fluently and has an excellent grasp of English grammar and communication.
  • Is positive, organized, and detail-oriented.
  • Has at least two years of industry experience as an analytical linguist or related role.
  • Is proficient with scripting languages (preferably Python) in a Linux environment.
  • Has experience with research processes and qualitative and quantitative approaches.
  • Has worked with and developed annotated corpora, including crowdsourcing and/or vendor management.
  • Has experience in developing and evaluating prompt-based solutions.
  • Has a demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal guidance, proactively manages tasks and priorities across multiple projects, analyzes and executes work efficiently, collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams, and thrives in fast-paced, results-driven environments.
