About the Role

Wirecutter is looking for an experienced visual storyteller with excellent taste and deep design abilities, who is passionate about color, typography, and composition. Your goal is to bring clarity and understanding to our journalism, helping us educate, inform, and inspire through compelling visuals.

You'll report to the Creative Director and manage a Visual Designer. You'll partner directly with writers and editors from a story's earliest stages to help shape the narrative, not just add visuals. This means you'll explore unique angles and opportunities with rich visual possibilities. You'll use a variety of graphic approaches, from art directing photography and creating on-brand explainer graphics to using video, motion, and animation to enhance our storytelling.

This is a chance to help develop high-end, immersive storytelling formats. Our team is growing, giving you a unique opportunity to help shape our workflow and the future of our visual output. This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with writers and editors from the start of a story to develop visual approaches that shape and enhance the narrative.
  • Design and direct a wide range of editorial visuals, including art-directing photography, creating static graphics, and developing infographics and charts.
  • Drive the use of video, motion graphics, and animation to enhance our storytelling.
  • Be a vocal leader, providing guidance on visual thinking and mentoring junior team members.
  • Contribute to the operations of our growing visual team, from workflow and project selection to our overall visual standards.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of experience in editorial storytelling with a strong portfolio showing how your visuals made stories clearer and stronger.
  • Excellent taste and a deep understanding of visual principles, including color, typography, and composition.
  • Strong collaborator with excellent communication skills, able to distill complex information and mobilize a team.
  • Proven ability to create clear, impactful explainer graphics and infographics that simplify complex information.
  • Highly skilled in Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, and ideally After Effects.
  • Proactive, curious, and outspoken, with a track record of pushing creative boundaries and inspiring others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with brand thinking, video production, and social media visual strategies.
  • Familiarity with product design processes and comfort working with product teams.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$140,000 - $160,000 USD
