Job Description

As an Electrical Designer, you will be responsible for designing electrical systems for new construction, remodeling, and modifications to office and laboratory facilities. This includes developing construction drawings, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring designs meet project requirements, industry standards, and budgets. You will also be involved in data collection, technical calculations, construction support, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The Project Management Office (PMO) provides infrastructure services to enable cutting-edge research and development. At the TSS.2 level, you might also participate in developing detailed engineering designs and construction packages, providing engineering solutions to moderate to complex facility electrical issues, and contributing to arc-flash assessments.
Must have:
  • U.S. citizenship for security clearance

Pay Range

 

$103,500 - $157,454 Annually

$103,500 - $131,256 Annually (TSS.1)

$124,200 - $157,464Annually (TSS.2)

This is the lowest to highest salary range in good faith we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

Job Description

The Design & Engineering Division within the Project Management Office (PMO) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented entry level electrical designer to join our team. You will play a key role in providing engineering design solutions associated with the Laboratory’s electrical infrastructure for new construction, remodeling, and modifications to conventional office and laboratory facilities.

As an electrical designer, you will assist in developing electrical system designs, preparing construction drawings, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure project success. You will work closely with design managers, engineers and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality designs that meet project requirements, timelines, and budgets.

The Project Management Office (PMO) provides LLNL with engineering, design, estimating, construction, and project management services. PMO provides infrastructure services to enable cutting-edge research and development in the areas of defense technologies, global security, laser science, bioscience, and more. PMO offers cradle to grave infrastructure services to achieve reliable delivery of completed projects with priority on safety, collaboration, and a workforce working toward our shared vision.

You Will

  • Engineering Design and Analysis: Conduct engineering analysis and design for projects involving new facility construction, remodeling of existing facilities, and modifications to conventional office and laboratory spaces. Ensure designs meet project requirements, industry standards, and applicable codes.
  • Electrical Systems Design: Develop construction drawings and specifications for building electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, grounding, and other related systems. Collaborate with design managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure designs are optimized for functionality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
  • Data Collection and Organization: Support the design process by collecting and organizing data, required for engineering decisions.
  • Technical Calculations and Documentation: Prepare technical drawings, specifications and calculations, including load flow, branch, short circuit, arc flash, system reliability, relay coordination, motor starting analysis. Ensure calculations comply with relevant codes and standards.
  • Construction Support: Provide engineering support during construction by reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, resolving field issues, and performing site observations to ensure compliance with design intent.
  • Compliance and Safety: Perform all assignments in accordance with Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) requirements, security protocols, and organizational business practices. Ensure designs and processes prioritize safety and sustainability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the TSS.2 Level

  • Participate in the development of detailed engineering designs and construction packages for new facility construction, existing facility remodeling, and modifications to conventional office and laboratory facilities and equipment.
  • Provide engineering solutions to a diverse range of moderate to complex facility electrical issues and/or problems.
  • Contribute to the development of system arc-flash assessments and the determination of appropriate in-field personal protective equipment.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in power or an equivalent combination of education and electrical engineering design experience in an architectural/engineering consulting firm.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam and ability to get professional registration as an Electrical Engineer in the State of California within five years.
  • Knowledge of electrical one-line diagrams, load studies, branch and short-circuit analysis, arc flash calculations, electrical building layouts, and area classification drawings.
  • Knowledge in design work associated with electrical power distribution system components such as transformers, switchgears, uninterrupted power sources, backup generators, lighting and grounding systems.
  • Ability to apply standard engineering principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively collaborate in a team environment.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Fundamental knowledge of and experience using AutoCAD or Revit to prepare design drawings. Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

In Addition, at the TSS.2 Level

  • Registered as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of California or reciprocity from another state within 24 months.
  • Familiarity with the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E).
  • Experience applying independent judgment to develop approaches to solutions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, techniques, practices and procedures for completing tasks or projects in facility electrical engineering.

Qualifications we desire

  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the California Electrical Code.
  • Ability to use electrical design and arc flash hazard calculation software (SKM Power Tools preferred).
  • Ability to use Agi32 to perform lighting studies.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Internship experience at an Architecture/Engineering (A/E) firm or similar organization, with exposure to design processes, project coordination, or technical documentation.
