About the job

At Rockstar Games, we create world-class entertainment experiences.

Become part of a team working on some of the most rewarding, large-scale creative projects to be found in any entertainment medium - all within an inclusive, highly-motivated environment where you can learn and collaborate with some of the most talented people in the industry.

Rockstar Dundee is on the lookout for a talented Engine Programmer, who possesses a keen interest in all the low-level technology that makes a modern video game tick. If you’re the type of programmer who can’t leave a problem unsolved and you live for the rush of finally solving a problem that’s had you beaten for a while this could be the role for you.

This is a full-time, permanent and in-office position based in Rockstar’s unique game development studio in the heart of Dundee, Scotland.

WHAT WE DO

  • The Engine team is a global group of generalist programmers with a keen focus on lower level systems and squeezing the most out of the underlying hardware.
  •  We establish and maintain the fundamental systems relied upon across departments. Collaborating closely with stakeholders across all studios to empower the creation of Rockstar’s next big thing.
  •  We coordinate and support the wider efforts across the development team to get our games running smoothly and making best use of system resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement new core technologies necessary to realise the vision of our games.
  •  Maintain existing codebase and support the wider development team in diagnosing problems and coming up with good solutions.
  •  Communicate with users and partners of your technology solutions to ensure maximum impact on development and effectively prioritise your work.

QUALIFICATIONS

  •  4+ years’ experience in video game or similar low-level C++ development.

SKILLS

  • A fluent understanding of computing fundamentals and related terminology.
  • Demonstrable experience with C/C++ programming.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a systematic approach, producing scalable solutions not just patching holes.
  • Familiarity with game development practices, production methodologies and development cycles.
  • Ability to collaborate positively with other departments across Rockstar studios.
  • Strong multi-threaded programming skills.
  • Analytical skills geared towards the measurement of system performance, memory use etc, plus the communication skills needed to generate solutions.

PLUSES

Please note that these are desirable skills and are not required to apply for the position.

  • Prior experience in an Engine Programming role.
  • Active interest in data/content management, memory optimisation and/or platform integration.
  • Understanding of memory layout considerations as related to padding and cache efficiency.
  • Experience with crash dumps and x86 disassembly.
  • Strong 3D maths skills.
  • Understanding of code performance considerations, including “big O” notation as related to algorithmic complexity.
  • Interest in progressing into a leadership role.

HOW TO APPLY

Please apply with a CV and cover letter demonstrating how you meet the skills above. If we would like to move forward with your application, a Rockstar recruiter will reach out to you to explain next steps and guide you through the process.

Rockstar is committed to creating a work environment that promotes equal opportunity, dignity and respect. In line with this commitment, Rockstar will provide reasonable accommodations to qualified job applicants with disabilities during the recruitment process in order for such applicants to be considered for the position for which they are applying, as well as to qualified employees to enable them to perform the essential functions of their roles.
