As an Engineering Manager for the Code Engine team, you will lead the development of core technology for Semgrep Code, our flagship static analysis product. Your team will focus on building high-performance analysis engines, smart pattern matching, and language-agnostic rule infrastructure to deliver precise, fast, and usable static analysis, helping developers find and fix vulnerabilities without friction.
Must Have:
  • Partner closely with product and research leads to define and execute on a roadmap that advances Semgrep Code’s accuracy, performance, and coverage.
  • Lead a team of engineers building high-quality static analysis infrastructure and developer-facing APIs.
  • Manage, mentor, and grow engineers, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team culture.

  • Strong technical depth in languages, parsing, or program analysis techniques.
Perks:
  • Competitive and fair compensation with equity and benefits.

About Semgrep

Our mission is to make world-class software security available to everyone. This means building program analysis tools that are open source, easy to use, powerful, and fast. It also means building a team with security expertise and a passion for great developer experiences. Most of all, it means working with honesty and respect in a diverse community of dreamers and builders. We’ve redefined static analysis tooling by committing to all of these, and turned our project, Semgrep, into an essential safeguard for code at Snowflake, Dropbox, and more.

About the role

As the Engineering Manager for the Code Engine team, you’ll lead the group responsible for building and scaling the core technology that powers Semgrep Code — our flagship static analysis product. Your team’s mission is to make deep, precise, and fast static analysis accessible to every developer, bringing security-grade code understanding into their daily workflows without friction.

Semgrep Code is how developers find and fix real vulnerabilities — not false positives. Unlike traditional static analysis tools that overwhelm users with noise, our goal is to combine precision, speed, and usability so that developers can trust every result. You’ll help your team design and deliver the underlying systems that make this possible: high-performance analysis engines, smart pattern matching, and language-agnostic rule infrastructure that keeps Semgrep both fast and powerful.

As an EM, you’ll guide experienced engineers, partner with product and research teams, and shape the technical and organizational direction of the Code Engine group. You’ll play a key role in scaling our architecture, evolving our analysis capabilities, and ensuring that we continue to set the standard for developer-first security tooling.

You will:

  • Partner closely with product and research leads to define and execute on a roadmap that advances Semgrep Code’s accuracy, performance, and coverage.
  • Lead a team of engineers building high-quality static analysis infrastructure and developer-facing APIs.
  • Manage, mentor, and grow engineers, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team culture.
  • Balance near-term feature delivery with long-term technical investments in scalability and reliability.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the Security Research, Supply Chain, and Product teams to deliver a cohesive developer experience across all Semgrep products.
  • Contribute to technical direction, architecture reviews, and strategic planning for Semgrep’s core analysis engine.

You are ideal for this role if you have:

  • 1+ years experience as an Engineering Manager leading software teams.
  • 6+ years working on static code analysis, compiler internals, or similar program analysis technology.
  • 3+ years experience applying that expertise in the security domain (AppSec, SAST, or vulnerability detection).
  • Strong technical depth in languages, parsing, or program analysis techniques — and a practical sense for how to deliver those capabilities in developer-friendly tools.
  • A passion for mentoring engineers and helping them grow into technical leaders.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving startup environment with a bias toward action and iteration.

You might spend a typical day:

  • Partnering with product management to prioritize features that bring real developer impact.
  • Reviewing architecture proposals for new analysis capabilities or performance improvements.
  • Coaching engineers on system design or static analysis implementation details.
  • Collaborating with Security Research on new detection capabilities that leverage Code Engine innovations.
  • Celebrating a release that helps thousands of developers ship more secure code — faster.

Compensation

Salary Range: $171,000 - $239,000

Our compensation package includes equity and benefits in addition to salary.

Please note that the range listed is for someone based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

What we offer

Our goal is to competitively and fairly compensate every Semgrep employee with a system that equally rewards those who are vocal and those who are less comfortable making demands during the final steps of the hiring process. To that end, we generate internal compensation bands that are used when discussing and negotiating salaries. We update these based on market data to make sure they’re above the average for comparable roles.

We also invest in our employees’ well-being and long term success with comprehensive health plans, generous vacation time, 401k, learning stipends, and more. Our benefits are for everyone, so that you’re taken care of, and we work with individuals to make sure they have what they need, whether that’s quiet work space, adjusted hours, or something else.

Who we are

We have people from France and the Philippines, physics and philosophy, formal methods research and full fledged corporations. We’re new parents and new grads, aspiring authors and aspiring Americans, dog lovers and dogfooders. We get together often to bike, bake, and meet up in parks. In our interactions, we believe respect and honesty go hand in hand, and prioritize both.

Semgrep is an equal-opportunity employer seeking a diverse range of backgrounds. We value who you are — including your cultural heritage, your socioeconomic status, your age, your race, your gender, your sexual orientation, your disabilities. We value what’s vitally important to you — your family, your religion, your politics. We value what you love in this world — your music, your weekend pursuits. We believe in welcoming varied professional backgrounds, educations, and interests.
