The engineering co-op student will work alongside R&D hardware and systems engineering teams, supporting the development and testing of medical devices for in vitro diagnostics. This position involves creating and executing verification tests, troubleshooting instrument issues, evaluating design alternatives, and supporting feasibility efforts, while gaining knowledge of medical instrumentation and design control processes. The co-op will run from January to August 2026, working approximately 40 hours per week.
Must have:
  • Undergraduate student in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Systems, or Biomedical Engineering
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • General engineering knowledge
  • Proficiency in standard engineering tools and laboratory test equipment
  • Understanding of general laboratory practices
  • Competency in general computer applications (word processing, spreadsheet, internet data search, software programming)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
Good to have:
  • Completed sophomore year of undergraduate studies

Description

Position Summary: The engineering co-op student will work alongside, and in support of, R&D hardware and systems engineering teams. The engineering teams are a diverse, collaborative group working on the support and/or development of medical devices; the devices are used to automate in vitro diagnostics typically found in a microbiology lab.

This position will run from January to August 2026 and is expected to work an average of 40 hours per week.

The engineering co-op student will be supervised and mentored by the Director, Managers, and Sr. Engineer’s in the engineering team of Systems Development.

Interaction with Project Leaders and other engineers will occur on a daily basis as needed in the co-op period.

Basic Knowledge: The co-op will obtain basic knowledge related to medical instrumentation research, development, design, and testing. Candidates will be expected to have general engineering knowledge including the use of standard engineering tools and laboratory test equipment, understanding of general laboratory practices, general computer applications competencies (word processing, spreadsheet, internet data search, software programming, etc.), and strong oral and written communication skills.

Project Activities: This position will include creation and execution of verification tests, troubleshooting and evaluating instrument and system issues and design alternatives, and supporting engineering evaluations and feasibility efforts.

Design and Development Process: The co-op will be given the opportunity to acquire knowledge and understanding of the bioMerieux Design Control Process that addresses US and international regulatory requirements, as well as internal Quality Assurance.

Education: Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Systems and Biomedical Engineering undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher will be considered. Sophomore year completed is preferred, but not required.
