Job Description

The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing advanced Co-Packaged Optics and Optical Engine products. This includes integrating Silicon Photonics (PIC), various EICs, substrates, and passive optical components. The engineer will build mechanical models, collaborate with suppliers to ensure product performance under specified conditions, and perform mechanical and thermal analysis. They will lead products from concept to production, focusing on yield and reliability. Responsibilities include product design, developing interconnections, managing assemblies, defining integration design rules with OSATs, working with suppliers, designing fiber optics IO, and leading optical package development.
Must have:
  • Drive Co-Packaged Optics and Optical Engine product design
  • Develop Silicon Photonic (PIC) and electronics IC co-design
  • Perform thermal mechanical simulations
  • Expertise optical mechanical design using SolidWorks
  • Experience with mechanical thermal simulation
Good to have:
  • Experience with fiber optics alignment
  • Experience with optical sub-assembly design

Job Details

Lead Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design of advanced Co-Packaged Optics and Optical Engine products. This will include the integration of Silicon Photonics (PIC), various EIC’s, substrate, and passive optical components. He will need to build mechanical model of the product, work with internal and external component suppliers to ensure the final CPO and Light Engine product meets performance specifications under specified condition range, performance mechanical and thermal analysis. they will be responsible to bring products from concept to production with good yield and reliability. 
 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Drive Co-Packaged Optics and Optical Engine product design activities from initial concept to production.
  • Develop Silicon Photonic (PIC), electronics IC (including TIA, driver, and micro-controller), substrate, optical connector, and packaging co-design to achieve required mechanical and thermal performance.
  • Perform thermal mechanical simulations for analysis on temperature, stress, device warpage, and optical coupling.
  • Manage PIC and EIC interconnect schematic, padframe, and multi-chip module assembly at OSAT’s. 
  • Work with OSAT’s to define PIC and EIC hybrid integration packaging design rules, process flow, and material sets.
  • Work with electrical socket and optical connector suppliers on connector design, mechanical integrity, and thermal stability.
  • Design fiber optics IO for CPO and optical engine, including reflowable optical connector, FAU design, and fiber management. 
  • Lead optical package development to establish package manufacturability and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams consisting of Silicon Photonics, IC design, substrate layout, and module design teams.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with 7 years of related experience in optical transceiver electrical design.
  • Or Master’s degree with 5 years; or a PhD with 3 years experience.

Skills

  • Expertise optical mechanical design using SolidWorks.
  • Experience with mechanical thermal simulation.
  • Experience with fiber optics alignment process, methodology, and requirement.
  • Experience with optical sub-assembly design.

Working Conditions

  • This position is on-site full time.
  • May require occasional off-site meetings or travel
  • Regular use of a computer and other office equipment is necessary
  • Interaction with team members and external contacts is a regular part of the job
  • May require occasional overtime and flexibility in work hours to accommodate the executive’s needs
