Job Description

The Managing Editor will work with commissioning editors, publishers, external editors and our operational partners to organize and manage collections on behalf of key parts of the SN Journals portfolio. They will be responsible for the project management of multiple live collections and will work closely with our operational teams to provide an enhanced level of oversight for commissioned articles. This role ensures we can grow our Springer Nature journal portfolios at scale while maintaining an excellent level of quality and author service. Responsibilities include project management of live collections, supporting Commissioning Editors and Authors, engaging with internal stakeholders, monitoring content flow, and ensuring excellent peer review.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM discipline with interest in Science
  • Experience in publishing industry or science research
  • Understanding of research publishing landscape and Open Access journals
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
Good to have:
  • Experience in managing a journal or journal portfolio
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills
  • Awareness of research ethics

About the Role

The Springer Nature Journals Group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.

The Collections Management and Acquisition Team is a division within the Publishing Performance & Intelligence group providing expertise and dedicated resources to support the growth of commissioned content across the SN Journal portfolio.

 

The Managing Editor will work with commissioning editors, publishers, external editors and our operational partners to organise and manage collections on behalf of key parts of the SN Journals portfolio. They will be responsible for the project management of multiple live collections and will work closely with our operational teams to provide an enhanced level of oversight for commissioned articles.

Increasing commissioned content is an essential part of our strategy to grow our Springer Nature journal portfolios and this role ensures we can do this at scale while maintaining an excellent level of quality and author service.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Project management of live collections, including performance reporting (content flow and delivery, turnaround times, general submission/publication performance)

  • Support of Commissioning Editors, Guest Editors, and Authors with queries throughout submission, peer-review, and publication processes

  • Engagement with the Marketing department, Production teams, Editorial, and other internal stakeholders

  • Contact point for Guest Editors throughout the collection

  • Monitoring of content flow and delivery against collection submission window

  • Responsible for filtering of MS and general oversight that excellent peer review is in place for commissioned content

  • With the Editorial Support Advisor team contribute to robust workflow documentation to be used across all portfolios

 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a STEM discipline with a keen interest in Science

  • Experience in the publishing industry or science research

  • Familiarity with the Research Process and the Scientific community

  • An excellent understanding of the research publishing landscape and how journals and journal publishers serve the research community, particularly Open Access journals

  • Direct experience of managing a journal or journal portfolio is desirable

  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills – ability to directly query data is desirable

  • Practical awareness of the importance and key aspects of research ethics

  • Excellent presentational skills

  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders

  • A creative mindset and the ability to bring energy, ideas and new approaches

  • A strategic and commercial mindset, with experience in developing and implementing plans

  • Ability to adapt quickly to change, juggle a varied workload under pressure and work quickly and efficiently on own initiative as well as part of a team
