Principal Cloud Engineer

As a Principal Cloud Engineer at Toast, you will lead the design and implementation of cloud infrastructure solutions that support our scalable, secure, and high-availability applications. You will champion our cloud strategy, leveraging cloud-native principles to ensure our applications are adaptable and resilient. Additionally, you will guide the implementation of the AWS Well-Architected Framework to enhance reliability and optimize costs.

About thisroll* (Responsibilities) 

• Champion Cloud Strategy: Design, advocate for, and execute a comprehensive cloud strategy that aligns with business goals and advances Toast’s technological capabilities.
• Architect and Design: Lead the architecture and design of cloud-native applications, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable, and efficient.
• Cloud Best Practices: Implement best practices in cloud architecture in alignment with the AWS Well-Architected Framework, ensuring our solutions are secure, efficient, and cost-effective.
• Technical Leadership: Mentor and guide a team of cloud engineers, fostering their technical and professional growth while promoting best practices in cloud engineering.
• Collaboration: Partner with product management and engineering teams to understand business requirements and translate them into robust cloud solutions.
• Infrastructure Management: Oversee cloud infrastructure, employing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices to automate deployment and management processes.
• Security & Compliance: Advocate for cloud security best practices and ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Cost Optimization: Identify opportunities for efficiency and cost reduction in our cloud environment, utilizing monitoring and reporting tools aligned with Well-Architected principles.

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

• Experience: 8+ years in cloud engineering or related fields, with significant experience in platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Technical Skills: Strong knowledge in cloud architecture, containerization (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker), Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) technologies, and modern cloud-native design approaches.
• Leadership: Proven ability to lead projects and mentor team members while managing cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
• Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex technical challenges.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of articulating technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

Bonus ingredients*? (Preferred)

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or relevant fields.
• Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD methodologies, and related tools (e.g., Jenkins, Terraform).
• Familiarity with modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Go, Java).
