Job Summary
PayPal seeks a Principal Software Engineer in San Jose, CA, to design and develop highly scalable, secure, and configurable identity solutions. The role involves collaborating with product, architecture, and engineering leadership to refine new features, understand requirements, and deliver innovative identity solutions. Responsibilities include enhancing system operational characteristics, establishing best practices for code quality, and identifying opportunities for tech debt remediation. The engineer will influence technical decision-making and contribute to building a world-class CIAM platform, working with standards-defining organizations.
Must Have
- Design and develop highly scalable, secure, and configurable identity solutions.
- Engage with leadership across Product, Architecture, Design, and Engineering to design and refine new features.
- Collaborate with engineering teams, IT, and business stakeholders to deliver innovative identity solutions.
- Enhance system operational characteristics and establish best practices for code quality.
- Identify opportunities for refactoring, API changes, and tech debt remediation.
- Influence management for driving technical decision-making for technology selection.
- Work with standards-defining organizations on evolving identity standards.
- Drive decision-making for simple to complex problems with business requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Fifteen years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
- 8 years of experience in application design and architecture, related domains of technical architectures (network, security, and infrastructure engineering), information architectures, and data architectures.
- 8 years of experience and deep understanding of Identity and Access Management (IAM) concepts.
- 8 years of experience with Identity management technologies, protocols, and standards.
- Experience and knowledge of Identity standards including OAuth 2.0, Open ID Connect, SAML, JSON Web Tokens.
- Experience and knowledge of cryptographic algorithms and protocols and Public Key Infrastructure.
- Experience and knowledge of public cloud architecture, Cloud Platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP), cloud-native security, and Cloud IAM solutions.
- Experience with back-end development using Java EE technologies (Java, application servers, servlet containers, JMS, JPA, Spring MVC, Hibernate).
- Experience with HTTP and REST APIs and designing and building web services/microservices in a commercial setting.
- Experience and knowledge of SQL and other/NoSQL/modern database and storage technologies.
- Experience with software engineering tools (Maven, Jenkins, Postman) and best practices, including unit testing, test automation, and continuous integration.
- Experience with using Agile/Scrum methodology for software development.
- Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Job Duties: Engage with multiple teams of highly talented engineers and architects to design and develop highly scalable, secure, and configurable identity solutions that meet the needs of PayPal’s customers and stakeholders. Actively engage with leadership across Product, Architecture, Design, and Engineering to design, propose, discuss, and refine new features and functionality. Collaborate with other engineering teams, IT, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver innovative identity solutions that meet organizational needs. Communicate with stakeholders on technical standards, principles, methodologies, and trends. Enhance overall system operational characteristics by establishing best practices for code quality, reduction in tech debt, and building frameworks or shared techniques to improve engineering effectiveness. Identify opportunities for refactoring, API changes, and other types of tech debt remediation. Influence management for driving technical decision-making for the right selection of technology by giving forthright, understandable, and actionable advice. Work with standards-defining organizations to understand the evolving standards, identify gaps, provide inputs on platform gaps, and contribute to roadmap planning to build a world-class CIAM platform. Drive decision-making with team members with different views for simple to complex problems with the business requirements to help synthesize the best solution. Partial telecommuting is permitted from within a commutable distance.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a closely related field plus fifteen years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
Special Skill Requirements:
1. Business knowledge and technical expertise in application design and architecture, related domains of technical architectures (network, security, and infrastructure engineering), information architectures, and data architectures. (8 yrs)
2. IAM Principles: Experience and deep understanding of Identity and Access Management (IAM) concepts, including authentication, authorization, user lifecycle management, and access control (Role-based / Attribute-based / Policy-based Based Access Controls). (8 years)
3. Experience with Identity management technologies, protocols, and standards, and designing solutions for reliability, availability, scalability, and performance. (8 yrs)
4. Identity Standards: Experience and knowledge of Identity standards including (at least 3) of the following: OAuth 2.0, Open ID Connect, SAML, JSON Web Tokens
5. Cryptography: Experience and knowledge of cryptographic algorithms and protocols and Public Key Infrastructure.
