Job Details

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

The New York Times Culture desk covers the arts and culture to help people understand the world. Through our reporting, criticism and service journalism, we provide trusted guidance to help people live fuller, more considered lives.

The Culture desk is looking for a reporter to cover classical music and dance, in New York as well as regionally and globally. This is a fascinating beat, roaming from the Metropolitan Opera and American Ballet Theater to the Kennedy Center, La Scala, and much further afield.

You will cover the powers behind these institutions and how they fit in the broader culture and the intersection between art and politics, which has been significant in the current presidential administration. You will roam widely to capture the insights of artists, composers, musicians, choreographers and dancers and how their work reflects and responds to our world.

You will balance breaking news with more in-depth investigations, features, profiles and other enterprise reporting. Your stories may take the form of traditional service and reported articles as well as explainers, visual-first stories, reporter video and audio.

Sophisticated interviewing and writing skills are a must, along with the ability to contextualize music and dance within a larger cultural framework. You are comfortable with both tone and point of view in discussing a diverse range of subjects and subcultures.

Many stories will require teaming up with other reporters, critics and editors to deliver the best story. An affinity for teamwork and a willingness to share expertise, resources and glory will be important keys to your success.

This is a hybrid position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. This is a Guild position.

Responsibilities:

  • Report and write multiple stories per week, a mix of news, features, service and enterprise.
  • Cover classical music and dance; and the intersection between arts institutions, government officials and the presidential administration.
  • Collaborate with visual editors on new story formats and multimedia, including reporter video and audio.
  • Contribute to our regular pieces of service journalism and pitch new forms and topics.
  • Ensure stories are inclusive of a diverse set of perspectives and voices.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Classical Music and Dance Editor.

Basic Qualifications:
