About Abridge

Abridge was founded in 2018 with the mission of powering deeper understanding in healthcare. Our AI-powered platform was purpose-built for medical conversations, improving clinical documentation efficiencies while enabling clinicians to focus on what matters most—their patients.

Our enterprise-grade technology transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, with deep EMR integrations. Powered by Linked Evidence and our purpose-built, auditable AI, we are the only company that maps AI-generated summaries to ground truth, helping providers quickly trust and verify the output. As pioneers in generative AI for healthcare, we are setting the industry standards for the responsible deployment of AI across health systems.

We are a growing team of practicing MDs, AI scientists, PhDs, creatives, technologists, and engineers working together to empower people and make care make more sense. We have offices located in the Mission District in San Francisco, the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and East Liberty in Pittsburgh.

The Role

Our generative AI-powered products are bringing joy back to the practice of medicine, and we’re looking for experienced backend software engineers to join our growing US-based engineering team. You’ll be an inaugural member of a new team forming to build the data + processing foundations we need to support our continued growth. You’ll work primarily in Typescript and Node, and you’ll deploy on platforms like Kubernetes and Temporal.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and support the robust cloud-native applications, services, and APIs we need for our rapidly-growing business. Sample projects might include building a new processing pipeline or overhauling our data storage services to support increasing scale.
  • Research commercial and open-source solutions, and make build vs buy recommendations to bring new capabilities into the technology organization.
  • Enhance existing systems to add new functionality, and to improve performance, stability, quality, and security. Make quality-of-life improvements to the codebase, and help limit the growth of technical debt.
  • Build deep user empathy and maintain a user-centric mindset
  • Communicate regularly and effectively within and on behalf of our cross-functional product delivery teams. You’ll work with other disciplines including product, machine learning, and platform engineering, and will have opportunities to learn from and contribute to projects across the company.

What You’ll Bring

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with either: (1) Proven track record of rapidly mastering new technologies and languages - you're the engineer who can pick up TypeScript/Node and be productive quickly, or (2) Deep specialization in Node.js backend development - you've built complex, scalable Node-based systems and know the ecosystem inside and out
  • Experience building and deploying a complex backend system utilizing Temporal
  • Passion for engineering excellence, and a love for data and architecture
  • Several years of experience building software for a regulated environment, and understand the tradeoffs that can be required to ensure compliance with regulations and frameworks such as HIPAA, SOC 2, and HITRUST
  • Knowledge of industry best-practices and trends, and an enjoyment of learning new things
  • Willing to pitch in wherever needed - as a fast-moving startup we need to do good work, quickly
  • Strong plus for ability and desire to work in San Francisco or New York on a hybrid working basis

Must be willing to work from our SF office at least 3x per week

This position requires a commitment to a hybrid work model, with the expectation of coming into the office a minimum of (3) three times per week. Relocation assistance is available for candidates willing to move to San Francisco.

We value people who want to learn new things, and we know that great team members might not perfectly match a job description. If you’re interested in the role but aren’t sure whether or not you’re a good fit, we’d still like to hear from you.
