AECOM is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer / Supervising Traffic Engineer in Orange or Los Angeles, California. The role involves serving as a senior technical resource, providing specialized input to studies and design, and developing procedures for cost-effective work. Responsibilities include participating in interdisciplinary reviews, preparing construction cost estimates, performing quality control, writing technical specifications, and contributing to engineering budgets and schedules. The job requires leading traffic studies, supporting regional projects, and possessing strong communication skills for client and public interactions. Experience in transportation planning, modeling, and engineering for multimodal projects is essential, along with supporting various planning and preliminary engineering projects for roadways, transit systems, and bicycle/pedestrian facilities. The position also involves assisting with CEQA and NEPA compliance documents, and experience with relevant transportation planning and environmental processes is needed. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, detail-oriented, can work independently, and excels in time management.
Must have:
  • Certified PE/TE/PTOE license in California or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Caltrans experience required
  • Lead traffic studies for projects in California
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Relevant experience in transportation planning, modeling, and engineering
  • Gather and correlate basic engineering data
  • Perform work in accordance with budgets and schedules with little supervision
Good to have:
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with traffic engineering projects on the West Coast
  • Experience in business development activities
  • Experience with traffic operational analysis, traffic safety analysis, traffic signal analysis and design
  • Experience with ITS and technology projects
  • Balance of management and technical skills
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office programs and Project

Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer / Supervising Traffic Engineer to be based in Orange or Los Angeles CA.

Summary of  Responsibilities:

• Senior technical resource may serve as technical advisor for team
• Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise.
• Develops study and design procedures to facilitate high quality cost effective work by others.
• Participates in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.
• Develops construction cost estimates and estimates of technical efforts for projects.
• Uses expertise in all steps of completing discipline component of PS&E package.
• Performs quality control review of design calculations or drawings.
• Prepares technical specification sections.
• Provides input to the development of engineering budget and schedule to meet requirements.

Job Description:

  • Lead traffic studies for projects in California and support West Coast regional projects as needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to discuss projects with co-workers, clients, regulatory agency staff, AECOM staff, and the public in meetings and at public events, as well as write concise and readable technical reports and documents.
  • Relevant experience in transportation planning, modeling, and engineering for multimodal transportation projects.
  • Support a wide range of planning and preliminary engineering projects for roadways, freeways, transit systems, managed lanes, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
  • Assist project managers on various projects involving transportation plans, traffic safety, and public involvement, and the overall preparation of CEQA and NEPA compliance documents. Experience with FHWA, state, and local transportation planning, traffic, and environmental processes.
  • Must be highly self-motivated with the ability to successfully multi-task, perform detail-oriented work, work independently, and demonstrate effective time management skills.
  • Gather and correlate basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.
  • Work on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving design calculations, analysis, value engineering, writing technical specifications, and project cost estimates.
  • Propose approaches to solve new problems encountered, apply innovative design solutions, and implement current technology to meet project design needs.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and coaching to entry-level/junior engineers or technicians to help them improve their technical skills.
  • Perform work in accordance with agreed-upon budgets and schedules with little supervision.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Certified Engineer (PE/TE/PTOE) license in California, or the ability to obtain the license within 6 months.
  • Caltrans experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with traffic engineering projects and clients on the West Coast (California, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada).
  • Experience in business development activities, including preparing project proposals and firm marketing.
  • Experience and familiarity with traffic operational analysis, including traffic projections, analysis, and simulation; traffic safety analysis; traffic signal warrants; traffic signal and pedestrian crossing control system analysis and design.
  • Experience and familiarity with ITS and technology projects following the systems engineering process and local client requirements.
  • The right balance of management and technical skills, and experience serving internal and external clients.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office programs and other relevant software programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, and preferably Project).
  • Must be highly self-motivated with the ability to successfully multi-task, perform detail-oriented work, work independently, demonstrate effective time management skills, and consistently deliver high-quality deliverables.
  • Familiarity with or knowledge of MicroStation, AutoCAD, Synchro, VISSIM, or other similar applications.
