Must have:
  • 8+ years of journalism experience in digital video or broadcast newsroom
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to synthesize news into engaging video
  • Extensive professional experience in all aspects of the video production process
  • Strong organizational skills to supervise other video journalists and schedules
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud

  • Experience working in video podcasts
  • Interest in politics and national and international news
  • General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues
  • Ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines
  • Willingness and flexibility to work evenings and weekends

The New York Times is looking for a temporary Senior Video Journalist who can help develop and produce video-first news podcasts that reach mobile, social and digital audiences.

This is an editorially intensive role, charged with pitching and shaping podcast episodes, as well as helping manage the production of shows. You have a well-developed news sense and thoughtful story framing skills, and a refined understanding of production and editing techniques in multi-camera environments with meticulous attention to detail. You can research stories, write scripts, and generate questions for the host of the shows. 

We’re looking for a creative video journalist who is thinking about the story and the visuals from pre-production to publishing. This person will work under the direction of a Senior Producer, Podcast Video. 

You will work with reporters, editors, and external collaborators to establish and execute on a vision for podcast video work that enhances our report. This role is for someone with a deep understanding and interest in social video trends and who takes an innovative and adaptive approach to video formats and techniques.

This is a temporary (12M) hybrid position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. 

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and produce podcast episodes videos in horizontal and vertical formats
  • Oversee the work of cinematographers and editors
  • Work closely with newsroom audio editors and producers to guard standards 
  • Collaborate with newsroom social and video team to ensure smooth production timelines and delivery, including pitching posts for social team and writing captions 
  • Must be able to handle the pressure of newsroom deadlines and juggle multiple projects at any given time
  • Must be open to experimenting with new ideas
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to a Senior Producer, Podcast Video

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of journalism experience in digital video or a broadcast newsroom.
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to work with colleagues and reporters to synthesize news gathering into a tight, informative and engaging video
  • Extensive professional experience in all aspects of the video production process
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to supervise other video journalists and schedules, direct field crews, and hire and manage freelancers when necessary
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in video podcasts
  • Interest in politics and national and international news
  • General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for third-party and acquired visuals
  • The ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting
  • Willingness and flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
