Staff Machine Learning Engineer, ML Understanding

Location:
This role is completely remote-friendly. If you happen to live close to one of our physical office locations, our doors are open for you to come into the office as often as you'd like. 

Team Description:
We’re looking for a Staff Machine Learning Engineer with a deep understanding of LLM training and optimization to join our ML Understanding Team. The team develops foundational AI models and leverages the latest advances in LLMs to deeply understand content and communities and represent users’ rich and varied interests. You’ll work on foundational models and drive impact by enabling relevant, personalized experiences, enhanced insights, and accelerated development for Reddit product teams.

You will partner with Engineering, Product, UX Research, and Product Design teams to push the boundaries of what's possible with these powerful language models. 

Responsibilities:

• Develop state-of-the-art content-based embeddings to represent content, communities, and users.
• Design and deploy content understanding pipelines that leverage state-of-the-art ML models, small language models, and the newest LLMs.
• Conduct model evaluations, performance analysis, and optimization to improve accuracy and reduce bias.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align product and technical roadmaps and unlock key future ML capabilities. 
• Stay at the forefront of AI research, evaluating and introducing new modeling paradigms to keep Reddit’s ML ecosystem at the cutting edge.
• Contribute to the development of best practices, guidelines, and ethical AI principles for responsible LLM development and deployment.
• Mentor and guide senior and mid-level ML engineers, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
• Drive technical discussions, present findings to leadership, and contribute to long-term ML planning and decision-making.
  
  

Required Qualifications:

• 7+ years of relevant MLE experience in AI model development and deep learning. Experience in natural language processing, image, and video understanding is a plus.
• Expert at developing and productionizing models using TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Hugging Face Transformers.
• Experience building production-quality code incorporating testing, evaluation, and monitoring using object-oriented programming, including experience in Python, Golang.
• Experience with distributed training frameworks (e.g., Ray Training, PyTorch Distributed), and efficient utilization of hardware resources.
• Passion for developing scalable, well-designed, and responsible AI solutions that positively impact society.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to discuss complex technical topics with diverse teams.
