Job Summary
ByteDance is looking for a Video Codec Firmware Engineer to join its Multimedia Lab. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of video compression standards, including H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, and experience developing firmware for image and video processing on FPGA/ASIC environments. This role involves leading and participating in all aspects of the software/firmware development lifecycle, from roadmap definition to feature design and development. The team is building industry-leading, highly efficient, and scalable video codec hardware solutions to better serve the company's billions of users. The candidate will be part of a fast-growing team dedicated to technical excellence and building high-performing video platforms and services.
Must Have
- BS degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent
- Excellent software design and debugging skills
- Solid C/C++ programming skills
- At least 3 years of firmware development experience
- Knowledge of video compression standards (H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC)
Good to Have
- M.S. or PhD in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
- Experience with image/video codec hardware accelerators
- Understanding of perceptual video quality metrics (PSNR, SSIM, VMAF)
- Knowledge of H.266/VVC, AV1/AV2 codecs
- Experience with NPU & DSP development
- Experience with embedded processors (ARM Cortex, RISC-V)
- Collaborative mindset with strong communication skills

Job Description
The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $187040 - $358000 annually.
Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
