Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is seeking an Academic Graduate Appointee to join the Computing organization. This role focuses on building skills in software development, machine learning, and power systems analysis, contributing to new AI capabilities for power systems. Key responsibilities include conducting scientific research, data analysis, providing advanced technical support, collaborating with internal and external groups, presenting work, and contributing to multi-disciplinary teams. The appointee will engage with other developers to fulfill deliverables.
Must have:

  • Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Academic Graduate Appointee. The successful candidate is expected to build their skills in software development, machine learning, and power systems analysis while contributing high-impact work to fast-moving teams at LLNL build new AI capabilities for power systems. Focus area(s) may include extensible software design, adversarial AI, and power signals analysis. This position is in GS-CAD group in the Computing organization at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

In this role you will

  • Conduct research in assigned area under general direction and supervision.
  • Gather and analyze data and information in support of scientific research.
  • Perform technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to scientist in scientific research and development projects.
  • Collaborate with other internal and external research groups at LLNL and in some cases at other institutions.
  • Present work through presentations.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives functioning as an effective team member on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Engage other developers frequently to share relevant knowledge, opinions, and recommendations, working to fulfill deliverables as a team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See the additional information section below for details.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Experience with languages such as Python.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of standard machine learning libraries such as PyTorch and Scikit-Learn.
  • Experience with power systems analysis, adversarial AI, and development of software products targeting downstream customers of varying skill sets.
  • Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities and meet deadlines that are important to project success.
  • Ability to approach difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity.
  • Effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of personnel and ability to work independently in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills to prepare, present, and document technical information.

Position Information

This is a one-year Academic Graduate Appointee, open to those who have been awarded a degree at the time of the employment offer.

Security Clearance

None required. However, this position involves U.S. Export Control; this work must be performed by a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. national, or U.S. protected individual (e.g., refugee, asylee)).

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession. This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas. Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
