Job Details

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Please note that we may consider relocation support to candidates based outside of South Korea.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Editor in Seoul. This role is a hybrid editor/writer role, responsible for assigning and reporting stories for the breaking news hub, leading live blogs and briefings, and handling first and second edits on copy. The Assistant Editor will report to the deputy who heads up the Asia hub, a joint operation of the Live and Express breaking news teams.

Day to day responsibilities will include regular editing shifts for Express and Live, shared oversight of Seoul’s Live operation, and first and second edits of Express general assignment news, features, explainers and other material. The editor will assist with training and mentoring new reporters. The editor will also assist with breaking news copy from a variety of other desks during overnight hours in the U.S.

You will be asked to help with supervision of the news hub staff and assist with coordination and handoffs with other parts of the global newsroom. This position is a crucial part of the desk’s leadership, and will help to shape strategy and drive coverage while serving as an excellent opportunity to build deeper partnerships with colleagues from across the newsroom, and from all over the world.

This is a general assignment position, which will suit someone who is a quick study and versatile, able to cover a wide variety of topics and stories anywhere in the world. Ideal candidates have a sense of humor and an appreciation for offbeat, quirky stories that appeal to online audiences. The editor should be willing to challenge conventional news judgments but have a strong sense of standards and ethics. The editor should be a team player who is interested in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age, imagining new ways to tell stories and solving problems collaboratively. It is critical that the editor can skillfully work with reporters across a range of formats and should have strong editorial news judgment and extensive experience editing a variety of stories. The editor will also focus on audience growth and how the newsroom can expand its reach to readers.

This is a permanent, hybrid position based in Seoul and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. Working hours will generally be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Seoul time five days a week. Please note that this role will require weekend shifts, and occasional night shifts as news demands.

Main responsibilities:

  • Working on fast-moving coverage that is the future of the report while being flexible to tackle many topics
  • Helping launch and run live coverage, while providing guidance and support on anything from content to tools to organization and communication.
  • Skillfully editing and shaping briefings, blogs, chats and more and helping shape and define that skillset going forward.
  • Generating new ideas for live coverage and informing best practices in a changing news landscape.
  • Coordinating across the newsroom on stories that cross desks and running after-action reviews on how our coverage fared.
  • Forming strong partnerships with journalists across the newsroom and in bureaus throughout the world.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Our ideal candidate:

Basic qualifications

  • Strong news judgment, quick decision making and ability to assign stories and direct coverage.
  • Significant experience of professional daily news reporting and editing in a comparable role.
  • The ability to work fast on deadline, write strong headlines and handle frequent news updates.
  • Excellent writing, editing, grammar and style skills.
  • Deep knowledge of issues in International and U.S. news coverage, among other topics.
  • An interest in managing, coaching and training other journalists, sometimes during big news moments.
  • Ability to work with diplomacy and collaboratively with senior newsroom leaders and new hires alike.
  • A team player who is interested in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age, imagining new ways to tell stories and solving problems collaboratively.

Preferred qualifications

  • A passion for storytelling and infusing that skill into live news.
  • Demonstrated creativity in identifying and developing news features with a strong appeal to digital readers, particularly in the international audience.
  • A desire to learn new tools and journalism forms — and an interest in shaping them for the future.
  • An outlook that is reader-focused and seeks to serve the needs and interests of curious digital audiences.
  • An appreciation for quirky, offbeat stories that challenge traditional news judgments.
  • A self-starter with excellent technical proficiency and communication skills who can be productive and proactive in working with supervising editors and colleagues in both the U.S. and Asia.
  • Fluency in other languages would be a plus.
