Job Description

The Role – DBA Team Leader

You will take on a hands-on leadership role within the database team, directly supporting and managing the 24/7 operation of critical, customer-facing databases. While providing technical direction and mentoring to the team, you will also remain actively involved in the design, administration, and support of database systems across development, test, and production environments.

You’ll be expected to lead by example —owning complex incidents, guiding technical implementations, and working closely with engineers, project teams, and stakeholders to ensure robust, secure, and high-performing database services under high transaction volumes.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Hands-On Contribution:

  • Recruit, lead and mentor a team of DBAs, driving technical excellence and actively managing performance to secure operational continuity and personal development.
  • Actively contribute to complex database work, including performance tuning, troubleshooting, migrations, and architecture decisions.
  • Organize and oversee 24/7 support coverage, participating in the on-call rotation when needed.
  • Champion best practices in database administration, tuning, documentation, and process improvement.
  • Work with external support sub-contractors, defining initiatives, delegating work and assessing results.

Technical Database Management:

  • Take a leading, hands-on role in the installation, tuning, patching, and upgrade of Oracle 12c/18c/19c on Linux and Windows environments.
  • Ensure optimal performance and availability through active monitoring and tuning efforts.
  • Drive the implementation of robust backup/recovery strategies using RMAN and Data Guard.
  • Maintain and evolve operational documentation and configuration standards.

Cloud Technologies (AWS / OCI):

  • Directly lead and contribute to the deployment of cloud-based managed databases services using AWS RDS and OCI DBaaS.
  • Perform hands-on migrations from on-premises to cloud using tools like Oracle GoldenGate.
  • Monitor and optimize cloud resource utilization for performance, cost, and scalability.

Security & Compliance:

  • Implement and maintain security controls, including auditing and access management.
  • Lead patching and vulnerability remediation efforts with support from the infrastructure and security teams.
  • Ensure adherence to compliance and regulatory requirements.

Monitoring & Incident Management:

  • Define and track KPIs related to database uptime, performance, and incidents.
  • Use tools like Oracle Diagnostics Pack, OEM, Zabbix, and Grafana to monitor system health and identify performance bottlenecks.
  • Personally lead major incident resolution efforts and root cause analysis when needed.

Success will be evaluated by

  • Technical quality and impact of your hands-on contributions.
  • Performance and development of the DBA team.
  • Effectiveness in automating database administrative duties, incident management, change execution, and project delivery.
  • Accuracy and completeness of technical documentation and reporting.
  • Proactive improvements in system performance and reliability.
  • Stakeholder satisfaction and service continuity.

Your Profile

  • You’re a senior-level Oracle DBA with strong hands-on experience in Oracle 12c/18c/19c, container/pluggable and autonomous databases and a track record of delivering in high-availability environments.
  • You have experience leading teams or mentoring other DBAs, with strong collaboration and communication skills. Experience running remote teams distributed across different locations as a plus.
  • You thrive in technical leadership roles where you're actively solving problems—not just delegating them.
  • You’re comfortable working across on-prem and cloud platforms, including AWS and Oracle Cloud.
  • You have deep knowledge of backup, recovery, security, and performance tuning best practices.
  • You're calm under pressure, detail-oriented, and focused on continuous improvement—for yourself and your team.
