Smarsh is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Director of Engineering for the Insights team to lead and manage a team dedicated to building and delivering cutting-edge products for Logging, Metering, Tracing, and FinOps as a service offering. This role requires a dynamic leader with a deep understanding of cloud-native tools and the ability to collaborate effectively with multiple business units (BUs), their leaders, and engineers to ensure the successful adoption of our observability practices. Your expertise will be applied cross-functionally to drive the adoption and implementation of technical methods within various teams, helping the firm remain at the forefront of industry trends, best practices, and technological advances. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing insights for large-scale operations, with a focus on wide events and enhancing incident management. They will increase the adoption rates of observability tools across the organization. Roles and Responsibilities

    • Lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of engineers focused on developing observability products.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team.
    • Set clear objectives and key results (OKRs) for the team and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
    • Oversee the design, development, and delivery of observability products using cloud-native tools.
    • Drive the adoption of best practices in observability across the organization.
    • Work closely with multiple BUs, their leaders, and engineers to promote and facilitate the adoption of observability products.
    • Serve as a liaison between the engineering insights team and other stakeholders to gather requirements, provide updates, and ensure alignment.
    • Develop and execute strategies to bring consistency in observability practices across the organization.
    • Develop and communicate a strategic vision for observability products that align with the company's goals.
    • Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in observability and cloud-native tools to ensure the team is leveraging the best solutions.
    • Establish metrics and KPIs to monitor the performance and impact of observability products.
    • Provide regular reports and insights to senior leadership on the status and effectiveness of observability initiatives.
    • Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of current observability tools and practices, making adjustments as necessary.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration and communication within the engineering team and across departments.
    • Participate in the recruitment process to attract top engineering talent, conducting interviews and making hiring decisions

Desired skills & experience

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 12 years of experience in software engineering, at least 5 of those years should be in a leadership role, demonstrating a proven track record of building and managing high-performing engineering teams.
    • Experience with cloud-native tools and architectures, along with in-depth knowledge of logging, metering, tracing, and FinOps practices.
    • They should possess a strong understanding of observability principles and best practices and have hands-on experience with tools and technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, Prometheus, Grafana, Open Telemetry, and other related technologies.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with multiple BUs and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions.
    • Experience in developing or leading large or cross-functional teams of technologists.
    • Should have demonstrated prior experience influencing across highly matrixed, complex organizations and delivering value at scale.
    • Ability to develop and execute a strategic vision for observability products.
    • Strong business acumen and understanding of the impact of observability on organizational performance.
